What’s on during Christmas in Nottingham

After three long months since the start of the academic year, term is finally ending. Lots of you will be heading home for a well-earned break, but if you’re planning on staying in Nottingham over Christmas 2025, there’s plenty to get you into the festive mood.

In the city centre, Nottingham Winter Wonderland has taken over Old Market Square until December 31st (closed on Christmas Day!). The square has become a huge Christmas Village with an ice rink, an observation wheel and rows of alpine-style stalls for food, gifts and hot chocolate or mulled wine. In fact, you can see it here in this short created by one of our students: Christmas Village UoN short. It’s ideal for flat trips, date nights or just wandering round after a long revision session.

If you fancy a change of scene, head to Wollaton Hall for the new Wollaton Winter Light Trail, running until the end of December. The park is transformed with light installations, music and storytelling, and it’s an easy bus ride from campus

For something more low-key, the University of Nottingham Festival of Lessons and Carols is on December 4th at St Mary’s in the Lace Market. It is open to everyone and usually followed by mince pies and warm drinks. Closer to home, Lakeside Arts on University Park is hosting The Littlest Yak from December 13th to January 4th , as well as Christmas exhibitions and concerts.

On top of that, we suggest you keep an eye on the Students’ Union and society socials for Christmas formals, film nights and open-house dinners. Staying in Nottingham doesn’t mean missing out on Christmas at all!

Do you have any other suggestions or hidden gems for other fellow students spending Christmas in Nottingham?
