if you're in yr12 the year has just started, you have so so so much time to still think about what you want to do. personally i would think about what i enjoy and then start researching different courses, definitely prioritise discovering what course you want to do over which uni you go to initially.

also does your school plan to attend a ucas event or something like that? perhaps it's good thinking to wait till then where you'll get a larger perspective on the entire thing.

i was in a similar position and i’ve chosen an integrated masters in biology but u can do it for almost any subject. That way u get a masters in a specific research topic that u get to choose while keeping your options broad 🤍🤍 u can also study at unis abroad or do an industry placement which is soooo awesome 🤍

Hi @tryingtopasexams ,

It's great that you are beginning to think about this. The amount of choices can be overwhelming, so the best starting point is figuring out what you enjoy in your everyday life. 😊

Hobbies are an excellent first step. What do you enjoy about these hobbies and can they relate to any careers? You may wish to do some research into potential career paths, then look if they require/ you would benefit from a degree. For example, I have a friend who enjoys video games, however they lack interest in coding. Instead, they have completed a business and marketing degree and are applying for roles in marketing at game development companies.

If you feel unsure, look into degrees that cover a broader scope. For example, I'm doing business and management which opens doors in many roles like management, marketing, operations and HR. Personally, I'm self employed and I'm applying the skills I've learnt in my degree to my own business.

Another way you could decide is looking at the subjects you enjoy, as these can often directly link to a degree, but make sure the career at the end of it is actually something you would enjoy.

If you want more information into what a particular career is like, work experiences online or in-person are excellent to grow your knowledge, or simply ask! Contact a company that has people in similar positions and ask how they got they got there and you may get some great responses.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)
