University Advice

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of choosing my five choices for ucas...

I have an aspiration to study law next year, and I am in my final year of alevels.

My predicted grades are A*, A, C

My first four unis so far are...

York (AAA)
Sheffield (AAA)
Liverpool (AAA)
Lancaster (AAB)

I need to choose one more (I am aware you do not have to choose 5)

I am trying to choose between:

Nottingham Trent
Edge Hill (I have visited and stayed over in the accomodation)
Sheffield Hallam (I have visited)
Man Met
John Moores (I have visited, but did not really like)

Any thoughts, tips and advice would be appreciated!

Overall score: Entry standards: Student Satisfaction Research quality Graduate prospects
25 lancaster 92 63 83 79 81
37 nottingham trent 89 51 78 84 75
60 edge hill 85 53 80 74 66
70 sheffield hallam 83 47 78 69 73
44 man met 87 55 78 77 76
58 john moores 85 56 80 55 77 (The data has now gone and squashed up, but here are the 2026 uni Law rankings for the above unis)

Thanks in advance

Talk to your teacher about the C to a B, I was in the same position as you for a bit. Be as annoying as you physically can pester them, make timetables to show them how much ur devoting to get a B at A Level, cry to them- so do whatever you can you need that B because that’s limiting you a lot. As for the A, though it is super strong it would be considerably stronger if it was an A*. That way, your predicteds are A* A* B and there will be a lot more doors opened for you. Good luck!

Hi @pinklemonpiggy ,

Well done on your predicted grades! It can be tricky narrowing down your UCAS choices, but it sounds like you’ve made a great start already.

Since you mentioned Edge Hill, I can share a bit about what it’s like here both as a student in general and specifically for Law.

Student life and opportunities
There’s a lot to get involved in and the campus has a really friendly, community feel. A few things to mention

Student life events: our campus connectors run events throughout the year such as trips to Blackpool Illuminations, film nights, craft sessions, therapy dogs and much more

Study abroad options: a semester, full year or short summer programmes are available in a range of countries

The Catalyst: the library is open 24/7 with plenty of study spaces as well as academic support services, group rooms and even a rooftop garden for students

Support services: there are dedicated teams for wellbeing, careers, study skills and student finance all available for students

For law specifically:

The LLB is a qualifying law degree, so it gives you the foundation for solicitor or barrister pathways

A range of optional modules lets your tailor the degree to your interests

You can develop hands-on experience in the Moot Court Room and throughout the Law Clinic, which supports real clients

The department puts a strong focus on employability with opportunities for placements, networking and skills development

The Law Society is a very active society which engages in regular Mooting competitions and networking events so worth getting involved with

If you’d like to hear from a current law student, you can chat to Annable on our Chat to Students platform through the Edge Hill website. You can find it through this link - Chat to Students

Our main Open Days have now finished for the year, but you can still book a monthly campus tour. If you apply and receive an offer, you’ll also be invited to an Offer Holder Day where you can explore the department, accommodation and campus in more detail.

Feel free to ask any other questions and best of luck with your application! 🙂

Thank you so much! I keep being told by my teacher, that it is too late to change the grade, I also for context did AS levels in year 12 so in a way alevels is sort of a step up, they are mostly basing our pgs on our as grades and not our attempts such as practice a2 questions, which is odd because that is the closest we have done thus far to the actual alevel in the subject I got predicted a C (psychology) in. I could potentially boost my A to an A* but it is in Eng Lit which I don't think I will get an A* in, and it is too much pressure for me personally 🙂 Where did you end up going to uni and how did you persuade teachers. We have been told that if we are unhappy with a grade, then our head of year will change it to what we want, I perosnally do not think that a B instead of a C in unrealsitic as i know I am capable, able to and motivated to achieve at least a B in this subject or higher!

I’m still actually in year 13! I got A B E in AS Levels and I wanted to tweak out esp because I’d never done so badly before in maths, I was an A-B student. I plan on applying to Oxford Foundation Year, possibility Durham, Bristol, Warwick and Exeter!
