What will I be eligible for? (dropped out + previous qualification)

Hi, I'm currently studying with the open university but have a strong desire to return back to studying at a brick university.

I really dislike my studies with the open university and yeah.

I've previously completed one year of an engineering degree at a brick university. It was full time. I also began the second year of that degree, and dropped out half-way through that second year.

I've also completed a year of the open university, but I had self-funded the first year of my OU studies, which is what I have completed. But I credit transferred two modules (out of the 4). So I only paid for half of the year, out of my own pocket. This means I am not able to obtain a certificate of higher education from the open university.

I then began a second year with the open university, which I am feeling to drop out of. This is the year I took a tuition loan for, and it was a part-time loan to cover the entire year (so around 7.5k).

I wish to begin a 3 year degree now at a brick university, starting 2026 September-ish.

So in total:

1. I received two years of tuition loans for my studies at a brick university - I completed first year and left half-way through second year.
2. I received one year of part-time tuition loan for my studies at the open university - I have no completed this and will likely drop out.

I do regret studying with the OU, I wish I had just gone to a brick uni. I dropped out of the first one because I was stupid enough to think I could commute a long distance.

I have two questions:

1. How much am tuition loan am I entitled to?
2. Am I still entitled to the maintenance loan during the years I am not entitled to the tuition loan? - I would plan on contributing to the tuition cost with the maintenance loans.
3. Will I need to self fund the first year, or is it okay to begin self funding once my tuition loan entitlement has been depleted? Meaning, if I have one year of tuition loan, would I need to self-fund year 1 and 2? Or could I get a loan for year 1 and self-fund year 2 and 3.

Hi there,

Can you confirm what course and university you wish to study with now? How long would your new course be? Do you hold any qualifications currently?

Thanks,
Claire

I don't think I hold any qualifications from either, I think I do hold a certHE from the engineering degree, it was at a brick university, I know there will be a reduction of two yearsfrom that .

I've self funded the first year of my studies with the open university, but because I credit transferred for two modules, and self funded for two modules, I don't hold a certHE with the OU.
I then took a part-time student loan for the second year, but I wish to terminate my studies with the open university and I won't be completing anything. Will this year of incomplete studies further reduce my potential funding by a year?

My new course will be 3 years long, and it will be at hopefully warwick or durham.

Thank you so much for the response

Hi Drew, thanks for the response

The course I plan on studying is a full-time BSc Mathematics course, "G100"

Hi needsomehelpt,

If you studied a full time course for a year previously, that would be considered in the previous study calculation. If the new course is 3 years in length, the calculation would be 3+1- previous study in full time education = years left for full support.

You indicated 2 years of study therefore the calculation would be 3+1-2= 2 years SE. You would need to self fund the Tuition Fees in year one however, would be entitled to the Maintenance Loans and applicable grants. You would receive full support in years 2 and 3 including the Tuition Fee Loan.

Thanks, Clare

Thank you for this response! Will i still be able to get the maintenance loan in year one if I have a certHE though?

Hi there. Yes, only the Tuition Fee Loan is affected. Thanks, Leah.
