Hey,

Getting 50% on a test can feel a bit disappointing at first, but honestly, it’s not a bad result, especially when the test only makes up 30% of the module. A 50% is still a pass, and it gives you a clear baseline for where you’re at right now. You’ve still got the remaining 70% of the module grade ahead of you, which means there’s plenty of room to pull your overall mark up.

A lot of students get a mark around this range early in the year, especially while they’re still adjusting to uni-style assessments. It doesn’t mean you’re doing badly, it just means you’re still finding your footing, which is completely normal.

If you’re feeling unsure about what this mark means or how you can improve, it’s worth speaking to your lecturer or seminar tutor. They can break down your feedback with you and help you understand where you lost marks and what you can do differently next time. Your personal tutor is also there for this kind of thing. They can give you guidance on academic skills, point you to extra support, and reassure you if you’re feeling worried about your progress.

Right now, think of this test less as a final judgment and more as a learning tool. Understanding what held you back this time will make your next assessment much stronger. You’re still in a perfectly good position to do well in the module overall.

Good luck 😊

That entirely depends on what you consider to be a good score. But given that 70% of the module grade is up for grabs still, it's not a great tragedy still if you are unhappy with that grade.

Hi there,

50% is still a pass and it clearly maps out the space for improvement. It's not a bad grade, but it might not feel as the best one either. I would advise you to maybe use this as an opportunity to learn and find out things you need to work on. Maybe you will see that you should change your preparation strategy, or use some completely different approach like flashcards for example? Or maybe you will realise that you needed to do a few more mock tests before the actual attempt. But overall, I personally would not call 50% a bad grade, but it clearly says that you have room for improvement.

Good luck!

Hey @syedd1211,

In my opinion, 50% is a good foundational grade - whilst there is room to improve, it shows you have a decent understanding of the material being taught and can build upon this understanding with further revision.

It's not uncommon for students to achieve lower grades in their early assessments at uni - after all, it takes time to adapt to both the new teaching and the new assessment style - so I wouldn't worry too much about which grades or 'good' or 'bad' at this point. Instead, read through your feedback and create a clear plan of action for your next assignment/test, focusing on the areas that need the most work first.

As mentioned above, you still have 70% of the module ahead of you: keep working hard! 🙂

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
