Hi @username98729,

Exeter’s Computer Science degree is really well-rounded. In the first year, you cover the core foundations like programming, algorithms, software engineering, and computer systems, which gives you a strong base for everything that comes later. From the second year onwards, you can choose from a range of optional modules depending on your interests - things like artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, graphics, and even human-computer interaction. There’s also a strong focus on practical work, so you’ll spend a lot of time in labs, coding projects, and collaborative group work, which is really helpful for building skills employers look for.

One of the standout parts of the course is the final-year individual project, where you get to explore a topic you’re passionate about and produce a piece of work that can really stand out on your CV. There are also options for placements or internships, which are supported by the university’s Careers and Employability Centre, helping you get industry experience while you study.

The teaching style is a mix of lectures, seminars, and hands-on labs, so it’s not just theory - you get to apply what you’re learning almost immediately. Class sizes are generally manageable, so you can get support when you need it.

Overall, if you choose Exeter, you’d be getting a course that’s academically rigorous but also very practical, with lots of opportunities to specialise and gain real-world experience. Coupled with the friendly campus vibe and strong international community, it’s a place where you can really grow both academically and socially.

I would recommend coming to see the campus to see if you can imagine living there for 3 years: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/open-days/undergraduate/

Hope this helps 🙂

Hi there

Congratulations on your offers so far! We're so pleased that you are considering Lancaster 🦆

I'm not doing CS myself so I will do what I can to give a summary of what CS at Lancaster can offer you. If you would like any elaborations on the points I've mentioned, I'll pass this thread on to one of our CS ambassadors. Alternatively, you can chat to one of our CS students directly on Unibuddy: Ask a student - Lancaster University.

Facilities: If possible, we would encourage you to attend one of our open days or book onto a personalised campus tour however you can get a glimpse of our InfoLab building and the facilities inside here: Computer Science at Lancaster University

Course Content: An overview of what is covered in each year of study can be found on our website here Computer Science BSc Hons (G400) - Lancaster University The university as a whole is looking to improve the current curriculum across all departments so please keep an eye out for updates on our website as that'll be the most current information!

Employment / Internships: The careers team at Lancaster is fantastic, and you will be able to have lifelong access to the service as an alumni! Furthermore, we have a dedicated Business Engagement Team which can help you build contacts and arrange internships.

Non-Academic Aspects: As you'll be spending three years at whichever institute you choose, it's so important to consider things beyond academics. I would recommend looking into the following aspects:

Location and environment: The City of Lancaster and A tour of Lancaster University are great videos to help you gauge what Lancaster is like

Cost of Living: based on Student living costs in the UK 2025 - Save the Student the average Lancaster student surveyed spends £600 per month compared to the national average of £648

Nightlife: Lancaster has a few clubs such as our student union ran The Sugarhouse however, we definitely have more of a pub culture.

Societies and Sports: We have over 160 societies here at Lancaster which you can find here Groups @ Lancaster Students' Union

Hope this helps! Any other questions I'll be happy to assist.

Best Wishes,
Jade Year 3 MBChB
