A Psychology BSc at Durham, Bath or Bristol?

I am so so stuck between these three! Looking for any advice or thoughts from anyone.

(Especially from uni students and why they ultimately chose one over the others?!)

For a bit of context I am from Berkshire, I value university reputation, a nice city with things to do, I like locations that are a bit closer to me, year in industry would be good but not necessary and universities that provide a well taught course with good graduate prospects.

Hi! I'm final year Psych at UOBath and I have really enjoyed my time. However, the city is super expensive! The accom is also super expensive so if you're wanting a cheaper choice Bath definitely isnt the one. However, the prospects for the uni are super great and Ive met a lot of great people (even though the area is a bit posh for my liking).

The cit yes beautiful too but it doesnt have a tonne to do? it depends what you're into. Im happy to answer any questions but thought I would write a quick message whilst I saw your post.

Thank you so much that’s very useful!!
Hi!

I’m a final-year Psychology undergrad at Bath, so I can give you some insight.
I’ll start with the thing most people wonder about: yes, Bath is definitely on the expensive end, especially when it comes to rent. Second-year houses can be pricey, and the city itself isn’t the cheapest. But it’s also genuinely one of the most beautiful and safe cities you can live in, and because it’s small, you don’t really need to spend much on transport most things are walkable or on campus.

What made Bath worth it for me was how easy it is to get involved. The campus has loads going on, societies are active, and meeting people feels very natural because everyone tends to be in the same few areas. It would be great for you to visit campus and see for yourself if possible!

For Psychology specifically, Bath has a really strong reputation academically and within the field. The course is broad everything from cognitive to social, clinical, biological, forensic, and research methods so you get a proper insight into lots of disciplines before specialising later. I’ve really enjoyed it because you’re exposed to a lot of different areas, and the teaching feels organised and well-supported. A major thing that I looked out for when choosing was assessment style. As of right now, our Psychology course is very essay based. We have some lab reports and research proposals, but a lot of modules focus on essay-writing. Here is a link that may help: https://www.bath.ac.uk/catalogues/

If you’re considering a year in industry, Bath is also very strong for placements. It’s not mandatory, but lots of psych students choose to do one because the placement team is genuinely helpful in securing roles, and the options range from NHS, charities and research labs to corporate environments. Importantly, they tend to be unpaid, but there are bursaries for that too: https://www.bath.ac.uk/corporate-information/funding-to-support-unpaid-or-low-paid-undergraduate-humanities-and-social-sciences-placements/

Given what you said valuing reputation, wanting a nice city, and being interested in good teaching and prospects Bath ticks quite a few of those boxes. It is expensive, and that’s the main drawback I won’t pretend doesn’t exist, but academically and socially, I’ve had a really positive experience here.

If there’s anything you want to know, feel free to ask!
