Loughborough has recently revamped its CS course to incorporate more advanced aspects earlier into the programme.
Lovely campus based university. Computer Science has its own dedicated building (as you'd expect) and specialist labs on the top floor (Dark Room, Networking Lab etc).

The course is academically stimulating, and he can expect to be challenged in most modules (of course, if he has a CS background, then some will be relatively easy in the first year).

The department focuses on the following research areas (which is a massive plus if your son is interested in any of them):

Cyber, Network and Systems

Theoretical Computer Science

AI, Robotics and Human-centred Intelligent Systems

AI for Vision, Language and Reasoning

If he likes sports in any capacity, then he'll really have the chance to explore and develop this (from beginner level, all the way up to elite athlete). If not, no pressure as well.

Over 100+ societies, and an active CS student group as well (laser tag socials and other nice events), so he won't be stuck in his room if he's not in a lecture.

The only thing to consider is that Loughborough is a town, not a city. If he's coming from a city, then he may need to be prepared for things to be a little quieter.

Strong support to find a placement, with lots of support from the careers service and the School of Science placement officer (sends a fortnightly bulletin with opportunities).

I couldn't speak for QM.

I would encourage the both of you to go on an offer holder day. This will allow you to see the department and campus in depth if you haven't already. Happy to answer any more questions about Loughborough!
