lancaster v liverpool v sheffield mech eng

hii, this might be a bit of a long post so apologies!
I've received an interview for an MEng mech eng at Lancaster, as well as an offer for BEng at Sheffield, and an MEng at Liverpool. I applied for the BEng at Sheffield because I believed it would be easier to get into than the MEng. I didn't think I'd get something from all 3 and, in the hope I get an offer from Lancaster, I don't know what to choose. I've visited all 3 and my preference in that sense goes Lancaster 1st, Liverpool 2nd, Sheffield 3rd. However in terms of course raking in the UK, it goes Sheffield 6th, Liverpool 13th, Lancaster 23rd. I also have to consider the fact that to transfer to the MEng course at Sheffield I have to be on a 2:1 by 2nd year. If anyone has any advice to give me, please let me know!!
I'm also going to add that I got a PARTNERS offer for Newcastle, significantly lowering grades if I firm Newcastle, and I'm waiting back from Northumbria, should anyone feel that I should strongly consider one of these

Congratulations ro your offers. Well done.

If you could afford the "extra" year, go for MEng. Different unis have different curricula, for some unis MEng is not just adding modules at the 4th year but also have option for independent study project. This could better train your problem solving and reporting skills. MEng graduates could readily enter the route to qualify as professional engineers.

If you eventually choose MEng programme, Liverpool and Newcastle have well established mechanical engineering departments. Both would be your good options. Sheffield' mechanical engineering is equally good, if you prefer a 3-year curriculum. Good luck.

Ignore league tables, rankings and any other nebulous nonsense - its all just 'marketing fluff' and does not mean that you will enjoy that course or like being at that Uni more than any other.

Once you have offers you will usually be invited to a Visit Day at each Uni in the Spring term, and this is a good opportunity to look around more critically, listen to a more detailed course presentation, talk with current students about what they like about being there. Then sit back and do some calm, careful thinking. You do not have to make Firm and Insurance decisions until May and there is no advantage making this decision any earlier. Where will you feel happiest, which courses have a placement or study abroad, where is cheaper to live etc etc.

Hello!

First of all congratulations on all your offers, that's genuinely really impressive!

I would honestly say don't place too much pressure on the rankings, every university will have top notch researchers and lecturers who excel in their fields, so no matter where you go, you're likely to have great teaching. And, to be honest, it's not worth going to a high ranked university if you didn't like the place as much. Having a university you like the personality of is much more important, as you'll be living there for 3/4 years. As a Lancaster ambassador I'll obviously promote my university lol, and would say you have a very good top choice. The teaching staff, university life and culture, and the city I honestly believe are the perfect university setting. But aside from that, if you end up liking a different university more because of its personality, I'd advocate for choosing that - if your course is the best in the country but you don't like the people and place you won't get the full uni experience.

Hopefully this helped, if you have any further questions about Lancaster please feel free to ask me, or if you want more course specifics (especially if you're worried about quality of teaching) you can contact MEng students through UniBuddy on our website!

Hello,

Congratulations on your offers!

I will say there are a few things to look at when you pick your university:

The course (modules offered)

The facilities (learning spaces, labs)

The city (do you prefer a campus uni or a city one)

Societies and social life (as much as uni is about your degree, there is also the fun side too!)

Co-curricular activities

To go into more detail about each one, it is important to look at the modules offered and the course structure. Are they of interest to you, do you have a lot of optional modules where you can customise to do what you like and what is the content of the module. In terms of facilities, Sheffield has the Diamond where most engineering students may lectures and labs. There also other buildings nearby too like Mappin Hall. There are mixed learning spaces in these buildings so you can catch up on work in between classes. Sheffield is also a city university so there are green spaces interspersed between uni buildings which can be great to de-stress in during assignment or exam season and to have picnics in during the summer!

Sheffield has had the No.1 SU in the country for the last 7 years which means student life is important to the university. There are over 300+ societies so there is something for everyone to take part in and to learn new hobbies or skills. Finally, co-curricular activities (CCAs) are a great opportunity for students to use their degree knowledge in projects that can add experience to your CV. At Sheffield, we have projects like Formula Racing or Sunride which works with rockets and these are interdisciplinary, collaborative groups that work to compete in international competitions.

I hope this have helped out and do let me know if you have anymore questions
