Uni choices

Hello ,
I’m doing BTEC Level 3 Applied Science, but honestly, I have no idea what degree I should go for next. I’m feeling really confused and stressed because there are so many options, and I just don’t know which path would be right for me. Sometimes I feel like I should just pick something, but then I worry I’ll choose the wrong thing and regret it later. It’s hard to even know where to start, and it all just feels a bit overwhelming. I don’t really have a clear idea of what I want to do, and I keep going back and forth trying to figure it out. Any advice or suggestions would really help because right now I just feel kind of lost.

Step back. Nowhere does it say you have to go to Uni - or that you have to go straight from school.

Many 17/18 year olds have no clear ideas about what they want to do in life, and its always worth taking a gap-year to think. Uni is expensive, and you will be paying off your SF debt for most of your adult life, so don't just rush into this or pick anything/something and 'hope its okay'.

Hi there 😊

I can understand that choosing what you want to do post 18 is difficult with all the options and careers there are. I definitely felt overwhelmed with the career options available.

Have you tried speaking to your tutor or is there a careers advisors you could potentially talk to about this? They many help give you some options to go down.
Have you thought about what your interests are, your hobbies and your own personal skillset?
Going to university isn't always the only option you have - you can always do a degree - apprenticeship, vocational work, getting some work experience.

Definitely don't feel like you have to pick something for the sake of choosing. Its definitely more important that you considered what you wanted to do so you are less likely to be regretful of your options. With work experience, it can help you identify what you like and what aspects you don't. It can also be a way to explore options as a workplace as many different roles so being able to see it and ask questions about their job is definitely useful to see whether you would be well suited in that role.

I hope this helps and I hope you get to choose something that you'll enjoy!

Hi there, thank you for your message and patience. I completely understand how you are feeling! It's normal to not know yet and is the case for many people. I wasn't sure also what to choose to study and didn't want to make the wrong decision so I started an art foundation course which allowed me to explore the course and narrow down what creative avenue I want to go down. You could do a gap year which is great for experience and to save some money. Have apprenticeships crossed your mind? There are many options of what to do other than a degree so have a look and explore your various options.

Open days really helped me to explore my options and see what interested me. This is something I would definitely recommend. You get to explore the facilities, speak to current students/lecturers and get a taste of course and university. You can also ask any questions you have and get a feel for the campus. Could you see yourself studying there?

Researching various courses is something you could begin with now by looking at various courses that may interest you or your qualification relates to. Course pages have so much useful information including entry requirements, modules and facilities to name a few. Often they have some quotes from past or current students, lecturer details if you wish to speak to them and even visual content. I am a very visual person so watching course videos on YouTube and social media helped me in making a decision.

Lastly, I would say don't put too much pressure on yourself which is easier said than done but you have time and options to explore. Choosing what uni to go to or what course to study are big decisions and you want to make the right choice but even if you don't there are options in terms of swapping or moving unis. You've got this! 🙂

You can explore our courses here as well as get in touch with our course enquirers team who would be more than happy to give advice and assistance in choosing the right course for you here.

Hope this helps,
^Zac
