What do I do in the future?

I know this is smth I have to decide myself but im so lost atm :frown:
I'm in y12 taking bio, econ, english and politics (though I hate politics and will be dropping it soon) for A-level.
I'll probably apply to uni but i have no idea what degree/area to look at. I definitely don't want to do anything finance/law or medicine/engineering related and I don;t take maths so that limits my options. I also don't really want to do english at uni... would love any help, thanks

Hi!
OK I'm not much use here- ask chatgpt? 😭🤣 I do have to admit, in these situations, it's a decent option to turn to 😅

Besides the point, you could do like a social science perhaps? Like psychology or sociology?

Also look at joint honours

I apologise for not being any more use- Good Luck!

if your interested in biology, you could look at that at university or natural science, ecology, marinebiology, zoology, microbiology etc..

If you have quite a big career change you could do a foundation year in order to get onto the course you want to study. I didn't study any art related a-levels but realised that's what I wanted to do at university so I did a year at my local uni in order to get onto a bachelors degree. Honestly best decision I've ever made and recommend if you're considering something similar.

Hope this helps,

Hi! This is nothing you have to worry about too much.

The most important bit is that you know what you like/dislike. This is because it can determine how motivated you will be to study the course at University!

If you don’t know what you love/are interested in, I advise trying new things. Find things you love about particular subjects - this truly helps identify your passions!

This could be an important advice that you receive but I would suggest that you look at PPE.

About the course

The course is a good generalist course with the ability to specialise where needed.

I would suggest that you consider the following unis:

Oxford

UCL

Southampton

Exeter

Lancaster

Good luck

Hello!

While you have a lot to think about, I think you're much more aware of your likes and dislikes than you're aware of- which is actually a great position to be in for exploring what you want to do!

Based on what you've said, it seems like you're looking at going to university and the main subjects you're interested in / will be applying with are Biology and Economics based on what you've said. No-go's are finance, law, medicine, engineering, maths or english.

To start off with, it might be good to explore what you like studying in your Biology and Economics. For example, does the idea of research, exploring human/plant biology interest you? Have you considered genetic technology? Do you like the idea of working with graphs and numbers? Whilst you don't have maths A-levels, economics innately gives you a lot of core maths skills needed for a lot of subjects so your options might be open in that area. Business degrees are usually very versatile and will take almost any subject at a certain grade.

It's also important to look at your interests outside of these. What are your hobbies? Are there things that you enjoy watching or learning about, and is there a way for you to explore these further with a degree? I met someone who loved beer and ended up doing a biotechnology degree with a focus on the brewing process and developing equipment for it for his dissertation! While degrees are on specific topics, there's a lot of room for tailoring modules and learning to your interests

It could also be good to make yourself aware of what subjects are out there! Try doing quizzes, scroll through subject lists for what unis offer and see if there is anything that catches your eye.

Aside from a uni degree, there are lots of other options! If you're a practical person, an apprenticeship directly equips you with training and knowledge in a specific subject area, alongside work experience and the potential to work with that company after you graduate. There are also a lot of degree apprenticeship schemes that are apprenticeships that get you a degree at the end of it as well. These are good options for both experience and finances as they usually pay you for your work and fund your degree. You could also jump directly into work, if you want to explore that route too.

I know it can all be very confusing, but you have plenty of time to think about what you like. And even if you're still not sure by the time you finish your A-levels, a lot of people take a gap year, spend the time saving money or exploring their interests further.

I hope this helps a little bit!

Wishing you all the best,

Hi @Flyovertrees

You won’t be alone in wondering what to do next, lots of students will be in exactly the same position. One thing I really want to stress is a uni degree in a subject doesn’t tie you to that subject forever, if you don’t want to be something specific like a doctor or teacher, most degrees are pretty open when it comes to careers later.

You could start off by writing a list of the bits of each subject you really enjoy studying. Is there one aspect of your subjects that you specifically enjoy learning about? If you find there is start looking at uni courses that cover this, do any sound appealing? Spend time considering what it is you want to study now, not necessarily with a future goal of a career in mind, most degrees give you transferable skills you can apply to loads of careers, so don’t worry too much. But you need to do something you enjoy as if you don’t enjoy the course you won’t be happy and do yourself justice by getting the grades you deserve. Think about where your strengths lie? Is this because you try harder because you like this aspect of the course?

There are quite a few databases like prospects which have quizzes that you complete and they generate ideas of subjects you might be interested in. These could be worth trying for more ideas.

Good luck I hope this helps!

Any career aspirations?
Do you have a favourite subject?
It’s probably worth looking through a site like uniguide and seeing if any of the subjects in the degree subject guides appeal to you at all. Theres a site called Springpod which lets you try a range of spotlights for different subjects so you can see what you think. Also you could look at channel talent webinars because those are also free and you can explore a wide range of degree subjects 🙂
