Furious at YouTube ad preferences.

So my interests are nature, travel and aviation. I have nothing against ads as they help fund YouTube and its content creators. But I have set ad preferences to not get funeral ads, gambling ads, banking & insurance ads etc. I block ads I find inappropriate. However ad preferences seem to mean nothing to YouTube. Block a funeral ad and you’ll still get that ad umpteen times later. British ads are very depressing. So I changed my location settings to the USA then to Spain yet I am still getting depressing British ads argghh! I would use a VPN so I could change my location and watch foreign ads instead but no YouTube forbid VPNs, because they think you’re using them to avoid ads altogether which I’m not. It’s also so wrong that YouTube don’t care about their users online safety as VPNs block hackers and phishing.

'Ad preferences' have always been bunk tbh and rely on the whole thing being a lot more organised and centrally accountable than it actually is. The place that actually shows you the ad likely has little to do with it, it happens on TSR all the time where a random ad just breaks the entire format of the site, but it's not like TSR or even Google chose the specific ad.

Like so many models if you want the service without annoying ads you need to pay. I've never looked back since getting Premium as for the amount of time I spend on YT it's buttons and I never need to be bothered by ads ever again.
