Not reaching out to potential supervisors first (PhD Land Economy applicant)

Hi all, I would like some input. I submitted a PhD application in time by the internal funding deadline (Dec 3) but I did not reach out to the potential supervisor first because I changed the angle of my research proposal quite last minute and decided on another professor whose research interests align with mine more closely. I did put down my preference for a specific supervisor, even though I still have not email him yet.

My application is Under Review now. Is it too late/rude to even email him now? :frown: Or shall I do nothing and hope for the best?

During my application process, the admissions team did say it's expected for supervisors not to reply by internal funding deadline bcos they're likely to be very busy and I should still submit it in time if I want to be considered for funding...

Please advice! Thank you!

Don't worry I did the same thing, so it's likely that several others have also probably done the same thing. It's customary to contact first, but if they're interested in your proposal (and your app gets routed to them if you put them down) it shouldn't matter too much

Thank you so much for sharing your experience too!! That's a relief to hear!

Hey, I think it depends on the supervisors. If you already had an informal interview with them, I don't think there will be one after submission.

Yes, and I haven't, I don't think I have seen a single interview invitation yet, on all the major forums.

For the PhD in Land Economy course, interviews are required if an offer is to be set. So, if you receive an invitation for an interview, that's a very good sign.

Does an informal interview count? I have seen some cases where no formal interviews were required for an offer at Landecon. Thanks.

Informal ones are helpful. But a formal one with your proposed supervisor is required before an offer to be set in the system.

Thank you for your kind reply. I saw that someone received a “Decision Pending” update last Friday, and they mentioned that their prospective supervisor said January 15 was an internal funding deadline. They then had an “emergency” interview to meet the required interview step, as you mentioned.

I did not apply for funding. However, if an applicant submitted by the funding deadline but has not yet been invited to interview, would they still remain under consideration for admission?
Many thanks.

Yes, your application will be processed later, as they need to prioritise those who applied for funding due to the deadline. 15 Jan is the internal deadline, i.e., for supervisors. The department still need time to score and rank those applicants and make recommendations to funding bodies (Gates, ESRC, etc). That will take time too. Usually, they will get back to the rest of the applications in Feb.

Hey! Has anyone heard anything about funding for the PhD in Land Economy? Does the department usually notify if you have been nominated for funding?

If it is ESRC funding, the department will contact you because you need to work with the supervisor to put together a trainning plan. For other schemes, usually the answer is no unless there is need for inputs from applicants.

Thank you! Has anyone on here been notified yet? Departmental nominations to Cam-DTP are on 5th Feb, which means they would have probably emailed people who have been shortlisted for it?

It will be a one-week notice at most, i.e., on the 29 or 30 Jan 2026. The department can only nominate offer-holders. Therefore, they wait for as many offers as they can set before start ranking. This is to give every applicant the best chance to participate in the funding competition.

For applicants who did not name a supervisor in their application forms, or did not communicate with their supervisors beforehand and hence stand a good chance to be turned down by the supervisors, it ususally takes much longer for a decision to be made, as the applications often need to be reviewed by multiple potential supervisors and each of them may have one or several candidates they intend to take already (i.e., those who have communicated with them before sumitting their applications). The department will not set an offer until an eligible faculty member agrees to supervise, regardless how strong the candidate is.

The process is much more complicated and longer than one expects if viewed from the vantatge point of individual applicants.
