McDonald’s refusing my new availability because of uni — what can I do? (UK)

McDonald’s refusing my new availability because of uni what can I do? (UK)

Hey all, I work part-time at McDonald’s and I’m also a uni student. My class schedule is changing in January, so I asked to update my availability. I’m not cutting my hours it’s literally the same availability, just different days because my classes moved.

My manager basically said no because “we don’t change availability,” even though I have to attend uni to keep my Student Finance. I still offered weekends, overnights, and the same amount of shifts I already do.

Can McDonald’s refuse this when it’s a genuine uni timetable change? Anyone had a similar experience or know what my options are?
(also I kinda hate working there 😭)

Thank you in advance.

Hi there!

I'm sorry to hear your employer isn't being cooperative with your new uni timetable. What I would advise is speaking with your supervisor/manager again or perhaps an alternative member of staff who you report back to, in the hope that they will address this seriously, as you are a valid member of staff.

Alternatively, you say you don't enjoy working there? So maybe this could be a time to look for something new? Have you tried looking on the Unitemps website (Find A Job with Unitemps), this is providing that your uni offers this service? If they don't, then what about having a look on Indeed (Find a Job on Indeed)?

I hope this little bit of advise can help you

They're under no obligation beyond what's in your contract with them, be that a certain number of hours or work on specific days.

Hello,
thank you for your response, My uni is really far away it won't be really ideal to get a job there, I am looking for other jobs on the side! This was the first job I ever had so im assuming it would be slightly easier to get another job somewhere else now that I do have a little bit of experience(?)

That’s fair but my contract is actually a flexible hours contract. It doesn’t lock me into any specific days or hours, it just asks me to provide my preferred availability and they build the rota around that.
I’m not reducing my hours at all just shifting my availability because my uni class days changed. So I’m hoping they can accommodate that since the business impact is basically the same.

It might be worth still having a look on Unitemps as they may offer remote work😊 Things like open days are also a great way to earn money too!

From woking at McDonalds you will have definitely gained essential experience that can be transferred to another job, so looking else where will definitely be worth your time. This time of year there are many seasonal roles available too!

Hope this helps😊

Yes but your contract doesn't require they give you the hours on days you want. They still need to staff according to business needs, not employee needs.

If they have no one else available to fill your post on those days you're currently working, and already have people on the days you want to do (who don't want to/can't change day, or even that they just don't have any interest in asking them to change), they can and will just offer you the days where they need someone - which are the days you can't do.

As noted they have no obligation to change the schedule for you - if it doesn't work for you then realistically you would need to look for other roles elsewhere.

When i worked for mcdonalds they always used o be flexible and honour availability changes.
They could refuse it for operational reasons, e.g. not got people do do the days/hours that you currently are still doing.
Would it be worth speaking to the business manager at your store? Explain the situation and see what they can do.
Or failing that ask to transfer to another store who can accommodate the availability.

Hello. In this case if I were I would have asked the other colleagues to swap days with me. The only option.
Luckily I am also a uni student, my student Finance loan application ALSO GOT REJECTED. I am grinding my ass off and paying my fee as well. I asked my manager to change days cuz of my change in uni timetable and she did.

U should definitely ask other colleagues to swap shift or ask them if they can do ur days and u can swap your availability. You know what I mean.
Don’t always depend on manager. Even though they can communicate with other colleagues regarding availability but they just don’t want to and said u NO straight forward.

What did they do to harass you?
When i worked at mine i occasionally got sent to other stores owned by the same franchisee to cover on the odd shift and they seemed decent to work at too.
The franchisee who owns my old store owns a shed load in the midlands.
Where abouts was your old store?

Oh right.
I am in the midlands, so a different area to you and a different franchise.
The franchisee who owned mine owned several others in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.
