Durham

Hey guys, I got an offer from Durham to apply for English Lit and I live in London, so I can't really afford to go up there for an open day to check out accom, but I was wondering if anyone (I suppose primarily English students also at Durham or people who are experienced with the university) knew which college would be best for me to apply for?

Hiya! Unfortunately not an English Lit student but I am in the uni. I’d recommend looking on the college websites to see what sort of accom they offer. I can’t say which college you should apply to bc everyone has their own preferences, so you’re going to have to do some research to find out what your favourites are. I would defo keep a few things in mind when choosing though, for example: distance from campus; catered or self-catered; single rooms or shared rooms; en suite or shared bathroom; gowned or not gowned; what facilities they have.

Here’s a few useful websites that I used when I was making my choices:

Are there any specific things that you’re looking for in a college? I might be able to suggest a few if you tell me your criteria!

Hey! First of all, a huge congratulations 🎉

We may be slightly biased, but we absolutely love John Snow. We’re a modern, self-catered college offering a mix of en-suite and shared bathrooms (shared with just one other person), with small double beds throughout and no shared bedrooms. We’re around a 15-minute walk from Lower Mount Joy Site and the Bill Bryson Library, and about 30 minutes into town, with plenty of bus links available too.

We’re a relatively young college and coming up to our 25th anniversary. We mix new traditions with old ones, like being a gowned college for formals. Our JCR is super active, with loads of sports and societies to get involved in, and we also have things like our Access & Participation Fund to support students.

This is just a brief overview, but please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
