📚✏️✨ Rise & Grind: Glory will be mine!

hi,

On TSR, I go by Laiba and this is round two of Year 11 rising and making a comeback! For anyone interested, this is my old GYG. However, Round 2 means I will be improving from my burnt-out, messy self and using a clean slate!

Some things about me is that I am the deputy head girl at my school; I love the hp series and Gilmore Girls as well as almost any and every type of music.

10 Year Mocks

My goal? To do my best. I want to open my results and have no regrets. I want to get into all the courses I want. I want to get into any school I want.

I guess the real question is why? Why did I decide to bother? Well, I’m doing this to get into my choice of sixth form, prove to myself that I really can do it and earn the best ten-week holiday of my life once exams are over!

Stick around to watch me fall, rise and grind!

💚📚✏️✨

lol this is cringe - what was i thinking?

DAYS UNTIL GCSEs: ~157

Starting fairly late but I guess it is better to have something done than nothing at all.
This week I did two past papers for maths so now I am going to do the third one so that I can see what grade I can get overall according to the boundaries for this set.
Need to eat dinner - it is quite late but I haven't eaten yet so going to do that and then I am going to do the maths paper and update this shortly!

UPDATE:
Did the paper and marked it and honestly did not do as well as I'd hope to; I got 61/80. Across the board, I got:

Paper 1 - 73/80

Paper 2 - 68/80

Paper 3 - 61/80

Total - 202/240

According to the boundaries, since this is a specimen paper not under timed and exams conditions, I would give it an 8 although I can get a 9 for some of the years (I didn't look at 2025 since that wouldn't be reasonable) and I guess I can get a 9 for some of the years but not all and it is only 5 or 6 marks above so I think it's best I say it is an 8.
I am going to make a list so I can track what I got for each and every paper.

MATHS TRACKER

Going to make a note of what topics and questions I got wrong - actually I think it is best I also screenshot the question too. Can't be asked - going to make a folder and just organise it based on that.
Going to work on the topics I got wrong now!

topics to work on:

trigonometry

inequalities on a graph

volume

sequences

similarity

bearings

area under a graph

circle theorems

vectors

equations of a line

proportionality of a line (memorise the graphs!)

I don't think I am going to get much maths done now so going to organise this into my timetable to do tomorrow.
Going to try and sleep now so I can get up eArLy earlier.

DAYS UNTIL GCSEs: ~156

I have been quite unfocused recently so the plan is to do 25 minutes of revision and a 5 minute break each time.

9am 11am: Maths
watch the trigonometry video and the inequalities on a graph and then answer the maths booklets for each topic - I aim to spend one hour on each topic

trigonometry

inequalities on a graph

11am 1pm: Chemistry:
Make notes and revise the following topics as well as review the previous ones. If there is time, then I can do exam practice:

Core Practicals

Collision Theory

Rate Graphs

Catalysts

Enzymes

1pm 3pm: Geography:

continue with section A, booklet one of Paper One

start section B, booklet one of Paper Two

3pm 5pm: Biology:
I made mores notes on photosynthesis during a cover lesson at school but they're not done yet

review (blurting, flashcards) notes and add to them

continue exam practice with booklet one

start next booklet if there is time

5.30pm 7.30pm: English Tutoring

8pm 10pm: Computer Science:

complete booklet for 2.1.2

start unit 1.2

review some content of 1.1 such as Von Neumann Architecture (that's it I think)

Thank you!
For Speaking, I advise you to have memorised some phrases and your tenses fairly well! For example, try to memorise a sentences you can use for anything such as the subjunctive ('il faut que, j'aie du bonne notes pour aller a l'universite' or something similar to that!). I memorise some common phrases such as I believe/think/find that and always throw in a because, but, even if / when, therefore. When I did my speaking, I think my strongest point was the read out loud part and for that, I just focused on endings so for French, if there is an accent, ensure you pronounce it because that was a mistake a lot of people in my class made and even if there are words you've never seen, you can somewhat find a way to pronounce them e.g, if there is a -tion it is not pronounced the same in English if that makes sense. For the questioning, I just memorise some key vocabulary for each theme and topic e.g music, lesiure, family, friends, school and so on and based my conversation on that. Sure, memorise your questions if you want to but make sure it doesn't come off as that as you get assessed on fluency as well. Hope that somewhat helps!

I haven't done English Language but I can give you some advise since it is similar to paper two in a way. I posted some notes on paper one for English Language on my Note of the day thread! if you wanted to have a look at that? My advise is just practice though and finding a structure that suits you. For a lot of my exams, I try to prelearn language and analysis so that I can use it for at least 9/10 situations - I know some people may say that you can't revise for English but you definitely can! Vocabulary really helps too. Maybe you should go through every past paper and just plan your answers so that in the exam it can help you understand what you need to do. I think working from back to front is best - I know a lot of people in my year who didn't do that and then didn't get to finish the bigger questions. Start from Question 5 and once 45 minutes are up, move on and I mean move on lol because the timing is very tight.
For English Literature, I always write an essay on every theme and character and then narrow it down to 4-5 quotes I can use for any question as well as learning context and the grade 9 type of context that not a lot of people would know or write about! Also again, memorising your structure but don't make it seem rigid or calculated, more as a guide. I don't know if you have time but I think it is best you write at least one to three analysis paragraphs with everything in it, e.g quotes, context, writer's intention, that you can use for the majority of questions that can potentially come up!
Hope that helped and good luck for English - do let me know how it goes!

DAYS UNTIL GCSEs: ~155

Today, I woke up way later than expected - I kept hitting the snooze button on my alarm 🤦🏻*♀️
It is quite late in the day to be productive so I am going to try and do things so that I can be productive over the next week e.g completing homework, organising my room, to do lists...

to - do list:

finish off English notes from yesterday

English Language arc
English Literature Quotes
English Literature Context

write first 6 paragraphs of your story for paper one

do English Homework (important but I know this will be done later than now)

Computer Science Homework (although this is not a priority, I will probably end up doing it)

Geography Homework

Maths Homework + Past Paper for HW

I feel sort of sick and stressed because tomorrow we're getting our English Literature result and I probably failed and did really badly but it's fine - I can only look forwards, there'll be time to improve...

haha mine is terrible, I planned to get up at 9am but got up at 12pm instead 💀
I guess so - thanks.
For English in general, lots of people say you can't revise for it but I think that is a total myth. I think it depends on what year you're in though and how motivated you are too. For example, in year 10, when I started my GCSEs, I did every essay I could find, I did research on context and quotes until I got grade 9s in my essays. For example, in An Inspector Calls, I did an essay on every character then I would make this sheet where I would only memorise those three quotes and that will be it so no matter the question, if it was on that character, I would also say those three quotes and analysis and safe to say it wasn't a half bad idea. So I would advise you to do that for every text and for poems, I really need to get this done soon but make a table of every poem, so no matter what poem it was, there would also be that one poem that you'll compare it too and then you can memorise your quotes and context based on that. To be honest, I am pretty burnout and lazy so I just memorise a few quotes and context and do fairly well on exams (I usually get 9s) so hope this somewhat helps.
For English Language, I advise learning a story you can use for any sort of question. You can write a story and then see if you can adapt based on the question for every past paper. You need to find a list of ambitious vocabulary. I think I have one on my other GYG that I can find for you if you would like? Just memorise those words or any words and add it in your writing to make it interesting. Again, I am pretty lazy but I try to prelearn all my analysis so for example: sibilance = sinister effect, fricatives = fury, plosives = power. That sort of thing if it makes sense. Try to find your writing style and lots of practise, this part is hard and I struggle doing it too but it needs to be done.
For GCSEs in general, I just believe in this quote I read in a book that goes 'Perfect Planning Prevents Poor Performance' and it's true. The more you plan, the better.
Hope that was somewhat useful - good luck!
