First Christmas Alone — Looking for Advice on How to Cope

I’m spending Christmas alone for the first time this year. I normally visit my parents abroad, but due to a falling out I haven’t been invited, and I’m finding it really difficult. I’m looking for advice on how to spend the day and keep myself busy so I don’t dwell too much on how sad I’ve been feeling. Any ideas or tips would be really appreciated.

Volunteer at a homeless centre. Your life is fine.

What is wrong with my response? What have you got against homeless charities? Being alone on Christmas Day is a First World Problem, easily solved by, for example, volunteering at a Homeless Shelter.

dont listen to stiffy, if you have a few friends, just go out with them. If they celebrate with their parents, go out and watch a good movie (i heard zootopia is out). I understand that stiffy might feel the ned to point out issues people deal with in poverty cycles, but feeling lonely emotionally shouldnt be disregarded. You can go out and watch movies, go shopping, bing netflix, and maybe even go out at night! many people experience similar issues, and there's no need to go to a homeless shelter

that obviously wasn't what OP meant...

Are you at uni? Many campuses have Xmas meals for people not returning home which might be fun and break up the day a bit.

Why not do something unselfish for a change? Get off the screens and see what the real World is like for people less fortunate than you.

See if your uni or local community is arranging a meal for people on their own. We go and help with this sort of thing every year. It's a lovely way of meeting people and a lot of fun.

And if your local town is hosting a Christmas event, attending it would also be really fun with activities to keep yourself busy

You have encountered the pearl-clutcher, a species often seen in the Wild!

it's abt the tone not the suggestion, this person is obviously anxious and upset about their circumstances and getting told "your life is fine" isn't going to help? maybe people should read the room and have some empathy🤔😬

Who made you the tone police? How do you have such encyclopedic knowledge of what would help the OP?

The response was perfectly valid - and much less harsh or confrontational than the underlying point - re-appraise your response and consider that others are in far worse situations at Christmas time!

there are kinder ways to communicate that it's not about what they suggested..I feel silly even saying this because it's so blatantly obvious and no you don't need 'encyclopedic knowledge' to have basic compassion🙂

Leave those pearls alone! There is an epidemic of anxiety which can verge into Solipsism amongst Gen Zee and late Millennials, as TSR amply shows. Late Boomers and Gen X wrapping the young in cotton wool has not turned out well.

Hi Anon,

I hope you're doing better, and I'm sorry you've been finding things difficult :frown:

I spent Christmas 2024 alone for the first time last year, and although it got a little sad at times, I enjoyed the slow, peaceful day! I got myself a small tree and some decorations for my place the week before (a lot of things get discounted just before the holiday), and made it quite festive and cosy!
Come Christmas, I spent my morning listening to Christmas songs and watching the carols on TV, then finished some Secret Santa artwork in the afternoon, and ended the night by visiting some friends (who also stayed on campus for the break) for a roast dinner - courtesy of my friend's cooking skills😂

If you're at uni, a lot of campuses host "Christmas get-togethers" for those around the area! These typically consist of games, food, and community activities - this could also be a great chance to meet new people and make friends

I hope things work out for you and that you get to enjoy it!🎄❄️

Best wishes,
Tee - Uni of Staffs MSc DMM Student & Student Content Creator✨
