Opinions on Highers choices?

Hi! Currently in S4. This is pretty long so tl:dr, in highers, I want to do modern studies, history, english, RMPS and politics. In my prelims, I've got As in mods, history, and nat 5 maths. I'm awaiting my english results, but I'm predicted an A in that too. Done core RMPS, passed that.

Thinking of leaving at the end of S5 if my grades are on point, or the standard S6, then I want to do university in law and politics. I was just wondering what others who have been in my position think of my choices for next year.

I've done my Nat 5 prelims, and I've got A2s in modern studies, history, and maths. A B in graphic design and we don't talk about chemistry (I'm not a science or maths person) 😭 I haven't got my results back for English. I am predicted an A1/2 though. I take core RMPS to and I've passed that as well.

My choices that I want to take for Highers are: Modern studies, history, english, RMPS and politics. I am aware that there's a lot of essay based writing and information, and I've talked to my teachers too, but I absolutely love writing and reading essays, learning about politics and moral issues, history and things to do with the past etc; I want to be a lawyer before being a politician one day. Any thoughts?

I'm in S5 and am predicted A's in Higher English, history, modern studies, classical studies, and business management.

I've not found all the essay writing to be too much at all. I actually love how much essay writing I do.

It is a big workload, but it's more than manageable if you do your best to keep on top of everything.

If you've got any subject specific questions, I'm more than happy to help. 😊

Ahh, tysm!! I'm usually a very organised person, I do work when it comes out so I'm not stressing over 50 things at once. Essaying writing is my forte, but if its not too much then handling it should be much easier

Np! I've gotten the impression that the people who are struggling are the ones who don't manage their time well and/or are more STEM inclined, so it sounds like you'd be alright taking so many essay writing subjects.

Yeah, I have noticed that too actually! Some of my friends in more science and math related subjects do tend to struggle more than me. I'm not the STEM type, but I can understand why 😭

Hiya! This is coming from someone that's not the biggest fan of writing essays but took higher English and modern studies this year (pls don't ask why even i don't know), mods is decent at higher if you 're good at the memorising statistics, the essay structure is easy to use and i only really find the analysis bit to be the "most" confusing but i just got 35/40 in my essay section of the prelim so it's pretty easy to waffle your way through if you're really lost. Higher source questions (I've only done two out of three so far) are quite similar to nat5 and as long as you know the structure they're quite nice questions. My school does an international issue that isn't entirely popular so i won't talk about it but the social issues section is quite nice in the way that a lot of things often relate to poverty so you can always link it back if the essay question needs it.

Higher english is quite similar to Nat5 at it's core, just try to learn how to link back to questions accurately in RUAE right now and that gives you one less thing to learn at higher. SST has the same number of poems (if you're doing that) and aside from the ten marker becoming more work, it's pretty similar. Try to evaluate effectiveness of quotes/scenes in your essays as that'll give you a better mark and will also help at higher!

Heya! (:

sounds like some fab options you've got for S5! - haven't taken too many of them myself but i did higher modern studies & english, really enjoyed both courses - obviously a bunch of essay writing but sounds perfect for you if thats what you prefer!, if you have a look on the sqa website there is a section for the course content which is great to have a look at to get an idea of the type of thing you'd get to learn 😊

When i did highers, was still with covid adjustments so didnt do some of the projects and instead had the exam weighted more, but for mods you have an assignment in higher where get to choose literally any topic/issue referring to politics, social or an international issue to discuss which sounds amazing for getting to chat and learn more about something your interested in!

guessing you might have already had a look into this since your thinking of heading off in s5, but worth having a look into the specific courses available and seeing the type of areas your most interested in! - could maybe be something to do a moddies project on and then chat a bit about in a UCAS statement (: - had a friend who applied for a healthcare course and related in her moddies stuff on inequalities in healthcare being one of the driving factors for her wanting to do the course!

hope this helps a bit, best of luck with your current n5's!! <33

Omg thank you! Yeah, I've looked a lot into this, I'm dedicated into going into law and politics when I'm in uni. I'll research on projects and possibly be able to do one.
