can you still do a degree without a specific alevel required?

After my Alevels I’m considering going to university to study marine biology however most unis i’ve looked at ask for biology and chemistry separately, yet i’m studying Applied science (along side other subjects) so i’m doing all 3. would i still be able to get into the course with this alevel?

Applied Science as an A level, or a BTEC?

As above you'd need to check with them if it met their requirements. If not you wouldn't be eligible for direct entry - however there may be courses with a foundation year for those who didn't take the "right" A-levels (e.g. Southampton has a marine biology with foundation year course ).

There are also specific STEM Foundation courses for those with good grade expectations but in the 'wrong' subjects - ie. wanting to switch from Humanities or Soc Sci A levels to Science at degree level.

Hey @emsmith09 . This is a good question and though I am not studying it personally, I would say from what I know, in many cases you might still get into a marine biology degree using Applied Science (instead of “pure” A-level Biology + Chemistry), but you’ll need to check carefully per university.

Why Applied Science can work:

Some universities list “Applied Science” (or “Science (Applied) / Applied Marine Science / similar”) among the acceptable science-subject alternatives to A-level Biology or Chemistry.

So, if your Applied Science qualification is at the right level and counts under “science (or related science)” by that university, it may satisfy entry requirements.

What to check carefully/potential risks:

Many universities still list pure Biology (or Human Biology) + a second science (Chemistry, Physics, Maths etc) as their preferred or standard requirement.

Even if Applied Science is accepted, admissions teams might expect that you’ve covered certain core biological/chemical fundamentals (e.g. cell biology, biochemistry, ecology, lab skills). If your Applied Science syllabus hasn’t covered enough biology or chemistry, that could leave gaps.

Some universities may treat your application as “non-standard” if you don’t meet the usual A-level pattern, in which case they might ask for additional evidence, or suggest a foundation year or bridging course.

What you should do now:

Make a shortlist of 5 to 10 universities you would like to apply to

Check each university’s entry requirements page, especially under “accepted qualifications” or “other qualifications.” Look for terms like “Applied Science,” “BTEC Applied Science,” “Science (Applied),” “relevant science subjects,” etc.

Contact admissions teams at those universities (or email them), explain that you’re studying Applied Science and ask if it satisfies their requirements for Marine Biology. Many admissions offices are open to answering these kinds of queries.

If needed, consider a Foundation Year or a bridging course if the university offers one. Some courses mention that alternative science-based qualifications or access courses are accepted.

Be ready to demonstrate your biology interest e.g. through personal statement, any extra-curricular eco / marine / volunteering work, personal projects. Since you’re not coming via the “standard” route, showing passion and commitment can help a lot.

I hope this insight was helpful. Let me know if you have any more questions. I wish you all the best 🙂
