Rules around PhD funding

Hello,

I’m looking at doing my PhD online next year. My main home address is in the UK, and the university I will be using is also UK based. I will be in the UK on my first day of study.

Am I able to get funding even if I don’t spend all my time in the UK? I’m a UK national, and I will not be giving up my citizenship though traveling.

I’m trying to work out if I can be funded, or if this isn’t possible to travel and do my PhD. (I will have access to internet, and non of my PhD requirements are in person - this is strictly a question about funding, not my ability to complete my PhD)

Thanks

Hi Theo,

When does your course begin? Is it September 2026 and will you be living in the UK during this period or do you still plan on travelling whilst studying your course? Thanks, Jason

Hey, it will be September 2026 and I’m planning on traveling for a few years, visiting family around the world. This will be during my PhD. The PhD I’ll be doing is creative writing, and is 100% online.

Hi there,

To be eligible for funding you would need to reside in the UK. You cannot be travelling the world and still get funding from us. You would only be eligible to be in another country if it was a part of the course.

Thanks, Drew
