Anyone recommend sport coaching uni courses?

I’m looking at Sport Coaching degrees and I have a D* in BTEC Sport. I’m open to anywhere in the UK. Has anyone done a uni sport coaching degree who can share what it’s like, if you needed a placement, and how you found it? 😊

Hi there!

I'm currently studying Sport Coaching (with foundation) at Liverpool John Moores uni and I'm enjoying my studies and uni life so far! The content we're taught is genuinely engaging and is taught in a mix of large lectures halls, smaller classrooms and practical sessions in the lab and sports hall. The support from staff too is second to none - they are approachable, encouraging and always willing to help.

Studying in Liverpool also guarantees a great social aspect to uni life! Whether you live in or choose to stay at home during your time at uni, studying in such a great city means you're never short of fun things to do or people to meet.

This is just a quick general overview of uni life at LJMU studying Sport Coaching I hope it helps! 😊

Is this a BTEC Extended Diploma and is it specifically in 'Sport' or 'Sport Coaching'?

The top Unis for Sport degrees are Loughborough and Bath. Both are TeamGB training centres and attract top academic sports training/coaching staff and sports science staff. However, there are also plenty of other Unis that also offer good Sports degrees.

Be aware that there are numerous different Sport BTECs and Unis are often very specific about what they will accept - as an example, look at the BTEC requirements for this course at Loughborough - Sport Science, Coaching and Physical Education BSc | Undergraduate study | Loughborough University - specific BTEC course titles, specific units and sometimes requiring additional A levels etc.

'Choice' depends on which course/facilities/sports specialisms suit you, plus the obvious stuff like BTEC course and grade requirements, any required GCSE grades. Btw, any sort of work-placement or study abroad is a big plus for your graduate CV and immediate employability.

Hi 👋 Great to hear you're exploring Sports Coaching courses. We asked one of our Senior Lecturers to share a bit more insight into the course at University of Staffordshire:

Jack Bullock, Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and Sport Coaching, says:
Our BSc (Hons) Physical Education and Sport Coaching degree sits within a department ranked top 10 nationally for sport-related degrees. The course is taught by experienced lecturers with professional backgrounds in PE and sport coaching, with a strong focus on helping students progress into relevant careers after graduation.

You’ll typically study in small groups (around 20 students) and take part in a mix of academic and practical learning. This includes topics linked to the national curriculum for PE, work with National Governing Bodies (NGBs), and practical coaching and teaching sessions. Many of these take place with local schools and clubs, so you’re applying what you learn in real-world settings. In your final year, you’ll also complete an employer-linked project, often with a school, coaching organisation or NGB.

There are no exams on the course. Instead, assessment reflects the kinds of tasks you’ll encounter in sport and education careers, such as presentations, podcasts, video diaries and reflective work.

In terms of placements, there’s a formal placement in Year 2 in settings like schools or clubs, and many students also start gaining experience with the University’s partners from their first year.

If you want to explore the course in more detail, you can find full information here: 👉 https://www.staffs.ac.uk/course/physical-education-sport-coaching-bsc

Hope that helps. Happy to answer any follow-up questions 👍
