Greenhead vs Heckmondwike Grammar

Hi everyone!

I am currently in year 11 and was wondering whether I should go to Greenhead College or Heckmondwike Grammar Sixth-Form.
Greenhead seemed really nice in the open day and I really do want to go there but it is 1hr 30 min bus drive away, whereas heckmondwike is only 15-30 min bus drive away. However, I never had the chance to attend the heckmondwike open evening so have no idea how it looks or seems to be, but I have watched some of their TikTok’s and it seems like a nice college too..

Any advice would be appreciated greatly!

Any advice??
Is it more diverse at Greenhead than Heckmondwike? How are the teachers? I’m guessing the quality of education is pretty similar..

Bro the education is same everywhere it does not matter where you go but since its near just go to Heckmondwike as its selective the pupils are a bit well behaved, and they have uniform instead of informal dress code.

DO NOT GO TO HECKMONDWIKE GRAMMAR.

They have very poor support for struggling people, you aren't allowed to leave school at breaks or lunches unless you have 'earned autonomy' and the older side of the building is constantly leaking.

I would only go to Heckmondwike Grammar if you really, really don't want to make the journey.

Greenhead is much better, more freedom and worth the journey. Look into trains, they're much faster and you can apply for a 16-17 saver card for trains that gives you 50% off of train tickets.

Oh I never knew Heckmondwike didn’t allow breaks :frown:
Thank you for letting me know, and I will definitely be checking out the train saver cards you have mentioned. I can actually agree with your view on freedom, as I feel as though college is the time where you gain independence and enjoy having a more balanced time table too.

Thank you for your response, and just wondering, are you a student at Heckmondwike? You seem very knowledgeable about their buildings and rules!

Thank you for your response! I do get what you mean about education being similar in such colleges/ sixth-forms. I don’t even know whether my application for Heckmondwike will be considered since I submitted it 6 hours before the deadline 😬

Wish me luck!

Bro for Sixth Form Heckmondwike is rated requires improvement although its a grammar school, I am Asian literally it's not school to even apply to like its Ofsted for Sixth form is Requires Improvement -- So just don't. Like don't even go its only for 2 years (4 terms) it doesn't even matter like it goes too quick like in secondary school 5 years just went by, 2 is nothing. All it matters is not where you go for 6th form because almost all of them except private schools teach through power point slides like in school. So just relax. Reply ASAP.

Yeah you’re right, college only lasts for such a short amount of time— but wouldn’t you want this time to be the best it could be if that makes sense to you? I don’t want to attend a college that I will end up hating or feel uncomfortable in, I want to enjoy the two years that come by meeting new people, trying out new things (e.g. extracurricular activities I’ve never seen before), and have teachers that are kind, respectful, and most importantly, supportive. I think that these factors are very significant in how well you do in sixth-form considering how hard A-Levels are, hence why I am asking everyone about their experiences and views on these two colleges. So far it seems as though Greenhead is the better option. Hopefully this makes sense and maybe it helps other students decide on colleges too!
And again, thank you for your response because it does help! 😊

Hi !
I understand your issue, but please please do not go to heckmondwike!!
I have attended there since year seven and have lots of friends in the sixth form.
The school SLT is generally unorganised, unsure of any events and changing deadlines without properly informing the students of any major changes. They do not offer enough support for the huge amounts of homework which we are supposed to complete, which often leads to many of us not having to sleep for nights on end, at points.
They are not supportive of the children's mental health, instead preferring to have the kid suffer if it meant they would academically improve you.
If you went to hecky, you would not be valued as a proper person by the staff, only a human robot.

From the kids, it can often be a racist environment no matter what skin colour you are, with an often very toxic environment due to being pitted against each other in academic "competitions" ( also known as mocks aha)

But you do occasionally find some lovely friends who can help, but it's a tough place to attend.

I hope this helps you make your choice !!!

Hello, and thank you so much for explaining this! I’m really shocked that this is the truth about Heckmondwike Grammar— it’s usually known as one of the best in West Yorkshire :getmecoat:
And you are also right to consider the support given by staff members, as due to the large workload everyone has in college/ sixth-form, the minimum a teacher should do is to ensure that the mental wellbeing of every student is okay, and preventing them from feeling down or burnt out, and by reading your post, it seems as though Heckmondwike fail to do that. :frown:
Also, are you still in Heckmondwike now? If not, what college are you attending/ planning to attend?

:bumps:
