Hello,
This is a difficult question to answer and we would suggest getting in touch with the Admissions team: [email protected] or call them on 01225 383019 between 9.30 - 4.00 Monday - Friday.
Your overall GCSE profile is very important for this course, as evidenced by the 40% weighting, and we will consider your best eight grades including Maths and at least one English. In previous years the strongest applicants have had GCSEs of mostly 9 or A* and had predicted grades at or above our typical offer.
You might like to take a look at our Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Course; the entry requirements are AAA or A*AB including A in Maths and A in Physics with GCSE English Lang or Lit at 4.
I messaged their admissions department to ask the same. I have 9999888776. They take the top 8 into account. They said that my grades were “lower than most successful applicants”. I am predicted four A stars at A-level I just don’t get on with essay subjects which is what my 6 and 7s are in.
My school advised me to choose either Bristol or Bath as it’s unlikely I will get an offer as most people have pretty much all 9s. Applying to both would waste two choices on my form.
I know I have great GCSE results. It just kind of sucks that I don’t appear to have a chance at Bath, yet Cambridge are like “show us what you’ve got”.
Its extremely frustrating and we really do empathise - Mech Eng is an extremely popular course here at Bath and as such is extremely competitive. The reason we put weighting and look at GCSEs more than other courses is because we get a very high number of very high-performing applicants for this course predicted similar at A-Level (A*s and As) and GCSEs is another factor we use alongside your personal statement and your context/circumstances to weigh up applications and differentiate.
Please do rest assured that although it feels frustrating, we do take a lot of time reviewing applications fully.
IMEE is definitely a good call if you still wanted to try to come to Bath - some people do choose to apply for both Mech and IMEE (I had a friend at school who did this course and really enjoyed it). We also have courses in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Robotics Engineering - but this is of course 100% your choice and depends how dead-set you are on Mech which you can very likely get into at other unis with 4 A*s predicted.
