Choosing a business course? How to pick the right uni

Hi everyone, I’m Carol Southall, Head of the Business School at University of Staffordshire. Choosing where to study Business is a big decision, and with so many UK universities, it can be hard to know what to focus on.

I’m here to explore the key things you should look for, from teaching quality and employability to global expertise and real-world experience.

1. Look beyond the brochures
Look beyond glossy brochures and understand how a university will help you grow. Employability post-graduation is so important. Ask about real outcomes: where do graduates go? What opportunities exist for placements or live projects? Speak to current students about how supported they feel.

2. Use league tables wisely
Rankings can be useful, but they don’t tell the full story.
Things like alumni and business networks, international fieldtrip opportunities, and a more personalised teaching experience, often have a much bigger impact on a student’s success.
Look closer at the metrics that really matter to you, areas like student satisfaction or teaching quality.

3. Look for learning that prepares you for real business challenges
Look at teaching that combines theory with practice. This can be done by connecting classroom learning to business challenges, working on live projects with real businesses, working on placements, or getting involved with initiatives such as our AI and Marketing Hub.

4. Check the support available
You want support that treats you as an individual. Class sizes, academic mentoring, careers guidance, support for flexible learning can make a huge difference to your university experience.

5. Choose a place that listens to students
Look for a culture of listening and improving a university that uses student feedback to shape the experience.

6. Learn from globally experienced academics
Studying with globally experienced academics and active researchers brings real insight into the classroom. Staff involved in research or with hands-on experience from projects help you learn not just theory, but how it’s applied in practice.

7. Look at awards, but understand what they mean
Look for awards rooted in real student experience. It means you’re choosing a place that’s proven to deliver quality and results. But beyond that, it’s about being part of a university that continually strives to do better to innovate, to listen, and to help every student succeed.

8. Think about skills you’ll need for the future
Adaptability, digital literacy, teamwork, emotional intelligence, and an understanding of how to lead responsibly employers want people who can think critically, communicate effectively, and bring diverse perspectives to the table.

Final thoughts
A great Business degree should give you real experience, strong support, and teaching that keeps pace with a changing world. At University of Staffordshire, our industry partnerships, academic and alumni networks, and applied projects help students build the confidence and skills employers look for. Our modules connect theory with real business challenges, and students have opportunities to work with organisations through live briefs, placements and initiatives like our AI and Marketing Hub.

Because we’re a close-knit department, students are known as individuals and supported throughout their studies. Regular student-staff forums shape how we teach and help us keep improving.

From our first-year undergraduate support to final-year postgraduate, our focus is not just on academic knowledge, but on preparing you to thrive in a fast-changing, interconnected, intercultural world.

Wherever you choose to study, look for a course that will help you build confidence, gain practical experience and prepare for your future career. Join us for an Open Day and meet your future lecturers, or ask us in the comments if you’ve got any questions before applying.

What’s the biggest factor for you when choosing your University - teaching quality, location, experience, employability or something else?

honestly when I was first looking into university’s it was the connections to the industry I want to go into that really made my decision for me. I remember before going to my first open day at staffs the connections to the games industry was one of my main driving forces for attending but after meeting the amazing lecturers and really getting shown their dedication to the subject, I made my decision there and then.

So honestly in the end I’d say the most important factors were the links to the industry I want to go into and the passion seen in teachers. Especially Joe <3 #welovejoe

Completely agree with everything here!

I was close to completing my undergraduate course in Illustration and was looking into postgrad courses by the end of 2024 in preparation for this academic year. I attended a few open days and spoke to various lecturers across a range of courses. The lecturing staff from MSc Digital Marketing Management took the time to explain things to me 1-1 and answered all my questions, which I was really appreciative of!

I started the course this September, and they've been absolutely incredible and supportive, especially considering I'm studying part-time and I studied my undergrad in a different subject area, so it's a new experience for me

I have been really enjoying the course so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops - definitely an amazing choice!
