Should I stay at the same uni for my Master's?

If you’re finishing your undergrad and wondering whether to stay at the same university for your master’s, you’re not alone it’s a pretty common question. Birmingham City University (BCU) actually has some helpful guidance on this, and there are a few things worth considering.

Why staying at the same uni could make sense

Staying can be a smoother, more supportive transition into postgraduate study. If you’re already familiar with the campus, staff, and facilities, you can focus more on your learning than on adjusting to a completely new environment.

Postgraduate courses tend to have smaller class sizes, more direct access to staff, and opportunities for practical, hands-on work so continuity can actually be an advantage.

You might also be eligible for things like the Graduate Scholarship, which gives a 20% fee reduction for master’s or PhD courses if you’ve studied at BCU before. Plus, there’s a fast-track application route for current students, which makes enrolling really straightforward

What BCU students say

Emily Springall, MA Visual Communication, highlighted the support she felt when deciding to stay:

“I chose to stay at BCU because I knew I would continue to receive this level of support.”

Billy Benham (MA Video Game Development) said staying meant he could dive straight into real-world style projects with tutors he already knew:

“Being familiar with the staff and the facilities made the master’s feel like a natural next step it was more professional and collaborative than I expected.”

Lucy O’Sullivan (MSc Physiotherapy) pointed out how smooth the transition was thanks to the fast-track application process and supportive tutors.

Things to think about

While staying has perks, it’s worth asking yourself a few questions:

Will staying give you enough new perspectives, or would a fresh university challenge you in different ways?

Are the specific courses and modules at your current uni the best fit for your goals?

Are you happy with the city, campus, and social environment, or do you want a new experience?

Overall, staying at the same university for your master’s can be a really sensible option, especially if you value continuity, support, and a strong connection with staff and facilities. But, like most decisions, it depends on your personal goals and what kind of experience you want from postgraduate study.

Students staying at BCU could be eligible for 20% off their tuition fees with The Graduate Scholarship. If you want to find out more, get your free guide to postgraduate study.
