Biology at Kent

If anybody attends University of Kent could you please tell me what the biology undergrad course is like?! I’m applying for 2026 and would love to have an insight, any tips on accommodation or student life anything like that would be appreciated too, thanks!

Hi,
I hope you are well and had a lovely Christmas break and new year!😊🎉

It's great to see that you are asking questions about what it's like to study at university! It's so important to feel at home wherever you choose, so questions like these are really useful when deciding where to go! I have been at Kent for 4 years now, so I would be happy to give you an insight into what it's like to study here!😊

Unfortunately, I do not study Biology, it was never my strong point at school!🤭 Social Science is my area! However, I have been in touch with the Biology team and hope to have a response soon with a little bit more information about the course and what it's like to study Biology at Kent, so I'll be in touch as soon as I hear back😊

In the meantime, I thought I'd add a few things about what it's like to study at Kent to give you a bit of an insight into student life here:

The campus is really green, and there are some nice walks around campus where you can spot lots of wildlife- my favourite are the campus rabbits!🐇🌿

Everything you need is all in one place. The library is at the centre of the campus and has a lovely cafe and lots of different seating for students to use when studying📚️

There are so many societies for students to join, including sports, academic, religious, and hobby societies⛹️🎙️📖 We have a cinema on campus too, as well as a gym and a nightclub. So there are plenty of opportunities for students to meet new friends!

We are also a short walk or bus ride away from Canterbury City centre, where there are lots of places to shop and eat, go out in the evening, as well as some great places to meet with friends😊

I have used both the Careers Service and Student Support and Wellbeing, and have found both teams to be extremely helpful, so approachable, and on hand to support students throughout their studies! Whether you are on campus or at home for a break, they have online and in person meetings which means the team is on hand to support you from wherever you are, which works around my often busy schedule!🤗

Lastly, we have the Student Ambassador Scheme and part-time work which Kent Union offers which is great for students to earn some extra cash around their studies, and add some experience and skills to their CV's! For example, Jobshop, which is run by Kent Union, offers part-time work opportunities in our campus Co-op, cafe's, nightclub, and more!

In terms of accommodation, I do not live on campus, but I know that the ParkWood accommodation is a popular choice for first years because students share houses which offers many opportunities for making friends. The houses are set in a little mini-village and are shared between 5-6 students. You can take a virtual tour around the houses here and find out more about pricing and facilities there too🙂 Check out this video to see a bit more of the student village and what students like about living in ParkWood.

One of my main tips for new students at Kent is to just get involved in everything! There's always lots going on in Welcome Week, so get involved in all of the society events and collect some freebies! Talk to new people, whether that's flatmates, coursemates, and even staff, everyone is super welcoming! Look out for opportunities to become a Student Ambassador or a Student Rep or be part of a Society Committee because I have made so many friends from these experiences!😊 And finally, keep up to date with everything else that happens on campus because Kent Union holds events throughout the year, such as Christmas crafting, pub quizes, and Vensday- the student club events! You can find out more about their events here.

I hope this helps to give you an insight into student life at Kent! 😊 Have you been able to visit the campus?

We know the UCAS deadline for 2026 entry is fast approaching, so if you need any support with your personal statement or have any other questions, please let us know and we will be happy to help!😊

We hope you consider studying with us!😊
Best wishes,

Hi,
I hope you are well!

I have been in touch with the Biology department and I have very kindly received a response from one of our stage 3 students about their overall experience on the Biology course😊 They have said:

"I’ve really enjoyed the Biology undergraduate course, particularly the wide range of modules available, which lets you explore different areas of Biology. The lecturers are very friendly and approachable, and there’s a lot of support during practical sessions. In the final year, the flexibility in choosing a project has been a real highlight, as it allows you to focus on a topic you’re genuinely interested in.

I will be doing a communications project, where I’ll be creating short-form educational content for school students focused on animal conservation. That said, students have a very wide range of topics and project types to choose from. There are wet and dry lab projects, which can cover topics ranging from treating multi-species biofilm formation in catheter-associated urinary tract infections to research on hops, the microbiome, or the development of screening platforms for pesticide absorption in plants. There are also dissertation-style research projects, where students can decide on their own topic, as well as business-focused projects if that’s a field you might be interested in pursuing in the future.

In terms of university life, I’d definitely recommend going to welcome week events, as they’re a great way to meet people early on. Getting involved with your accommodation and inviting flatmates along to things can help you build close friendships. Joining societies is also a great way to meet new people and try something new."

I hope this helps to give you an insight into Biology here at Kent, and you can view some of our facilities and other students experiences here!

We really hope you consider studying with us!😊
Best of luck with your university applications!🍀

Best wishes,
Josie
