law extracurriculars

hi, I’m an aspiring lawyer in y12 and I’m trying to get into programmes to help me for law. So far Im
In both the cambridge he+ programme and social mobility foundation programme for law
However my sixth form is offering an enrichment for people who’s targets are top russel group unis with different subject specific courses

However I’m not sure if it’s worth doing another law programme or if I should go a bit more broad to possibly ppe, which would also help towards my career (international law/UN)

I would think to do PPE but the only thing that’s stopping me is the fact that my sixth forms programme offers:

support for uni applications for your chosen course
support for interviews and early admissions tests
more wider research for the course
university lectures and career talks for that subject
sessions with alumni students

because of this I’m thinking I should pick the law enrichment just so that I can get support directly from college too rather than support for a course that I don’t really want to do at uni (even tho it would help with wider understanding)

the prestige of oxford is a bonus not gonna lie!

It's best to study the subject that most interests you. There is time to develop a career after university, and your ideas and interests may change over the next few years. Oxford or Cambridge need to be approached on the basis that you wouldn't mind an intense academic life as well as (usually) an active social life. Try not to let prestige determine your decisions. Good luck!

Hi @saudaida8 ,

Firstly, huge congratulations on getting onto both programmes - this is seriously impressive and already so valuable for your CV and university applications!

The dilemma about whether to look into a law or non-law (but still relevant to law) degree is definitely common at this stage, and it certainly is valuable to have a broader understanding for your future career. Studying an LLB isn't the only route to achieving your dream career - there is always the possibility of studying a non-law degree, like PPE, at undergraduate level then following this with a law conversion, a route which many future trainee solicitors (like myself!) take.

However, if you know for certain that you would rather not actually study PPE at university, and are set on working in international/UN law, I'd highly recommend focusing on law. Though I'm sure you're more than capable and a very bright individual, law is a competitive area so having that extra support for applications, interviews and transitioning to university-level learning is always valuable. As others have shared in the above comments, you can always broaden your knowledge on politics and economics while at university through extra-curriculars and your own wider reading. Having this knowledge once you get to the point of graduate applications will help to set you out from the crowd, but as you're only in year 12 now, you have plenty of time!

Best of luck for the future and I hope this provided some clarity.
