Student Maintenance loan, how does it work?

Hi! I'm looking to start uni at lincoln bishop in 2026 but i can't find any info on how a maintenance loan works in full, like how they work it out, whether you get it yearly or if its just a one time thing etc. I'm trying to plan a budget for uni at the moment and would like to be able to take it into consideration. Another thing, any budgetting tips for uni?

Thanks!

Hi there,

If you’re applying for a maintenance loan through Student Finance England, you’ll receive it in three instalments each year usually around September, January and April. The exact amount you get is based mainly on your household income, and you reapply each academic year.

The payments go straight into your bank account, and you can use them how you wish, usually to cover your living costs such as rent, food, travel and course materials.

Budgeting tips for uni

Treat each instalment as your ‘termly budget’ plan how much you’ll need for rent, bills, food, and other costs per term.

Keep a simple spreadsheet or list (e.g. rent, travel, food, course materials, social) so you know roughly how much you need monthly.

Try to open a student bank account. That way, loan payments arrive directly into an account separate from any other money.

Look for cheap textbooks, second-hand course materials, and student discounts for food and transport.

If possible, consider part-time work many students do up to around 16 hours a week, but it’s really about what feels manageable for you and doesn’t affect your studies.

For budgeting support, we have lots of helpful tips written by current students on Unibuddy. Go to Content, Topic and choose Budgeting from the drop-down menu: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-students/chat-to-a-student

Hope this helps!

Hey @jazzy0898,

I received a maintance loan from Student Finance NI and (like SFE) received the amount in three lump sums throughout the year. You should receive a maintenance loan for every year of your course - but as mentioned above, you will need to reapply each year. Reapplications usually open around March or so.

Rent will likely be your biggest expense as a student, so I would recommend working out how much you have left over each term once you deduct rent payments. Then divide that amount by how many weeks you have until your next payment and figure out a weekly budget for all other expenses.

Hope this helps and best of luck at uni!
