getting jobs

I've applied to 70 jobs in the past year, about 50 of them in Norwich, where I go to uni, and 20 in Kent, where I live at home during the holidays. I have only got one seasonal job in Kent, but they only gave me a 4-hour shift a week and have essentially ghosted me because they are incredibly overstaffed, as they continue to hire new people for some reason. I have managed to get 8 interviews, however have only attended six (there usually weren't any 'interview slots' when i checked). I have quite bad anxiety, so even though I try my best to act confident, I struggle with it a lot, so I am guessing there would have been better people. I don't know what I'm doing wrong other than this, and why I'm not getting interviews in the first place. I live in the middle of nowhere in Kent, so getting job is hard in itself, I do the equivalent of going into the shop and giving them my CV as my mum says I should do lol (I've emailed every shop, cafe, pub and restaurant within 40 minutes of where I live. I have about a 40% reply rate at this point) right now as christmas is coming up I'm looking for jobs back in Kent. Does anyone have any tips? I have had my CV checked, and most say it is good.

Hi @beefreya

I am sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with finding a job after putting so much effort in. There does seem to be a shortage of jobs at the minute which can make finding a job quite challenging.

My advice is:

I'm assuming you might have already done this, but if not, I would recommend speaking to the careers team at your uni. They might be able to support you with finding job vacancies, improving your CV and preparing for interviews.

Personalise your CV to each job. I have found that when I have added a couple of sentences specific to the job I have been more successful in getting through to interview. Some employers like to see that you have made the effort of researching the company rather than just sending out a generic CV.

Consider if there are any other job areas that you would be interested in as this might increase the number of vacancies for you. Likewise, consider your availability as the more flexible you are, the more likely you are to find a job.

Hope that helps and good luck for your job search!

Sophie.
