Univeristy Advice Needd

I’m near the end of the first semester of my first year, studying computer science. I basically have no idea what’s going on. I don’t know if it’s because I was out of education for two years, the subject just disinterests me, or something else but I don’t care about what I’m “learning” (teaching myself).

I generally love to learn, read a lot of books and am intellectually curious.

Should I change degree next year? I really wouldn’t want the same thing to happen; I don’t know if the root is that I don’t have the motivation to be a student again, or if the subject itself is the problem.

What I’m doing just doesn’t excite me remotely.

Other than that, life at uni is insane. I’ve met some amazing people, got my business up and running, and am learning a bunch of new stuff alone. It’s the perfect balance between independence and some vague structure to keep you on the rails. Just the studies are utterly abysmal.

Hi @Nicholson1882

I would recommend talking to your personal tutor if you have one about your thoughts and options. This might help you to clarify what the best next steps are. It might be helpful to have a look at what modules you will study next year to see if you think these are more engaging.

It is normal to have doubts about your course and consider changing. It is important that you are interested in the degree you are studying and that it will lead you to the job that you want. Take time to think about what you want to do and carefully consider all of your options.

Hope that helps!

Generally speaking, who is responsible for changes? Who do I contact regarding how to change for next year?

Hi there!

In general, I would recommend contacting your uni help team or your personal tutor as they are there to help you or should be at least able to pass you onto the right place. If you are unsure who to talk to, I would always suggest starting with the general uni help team as they will be able to guide you in the right direction of who to talk to!

I think that you should talk to your personal tutor or academic advisor about this as this is the kind of thing that they can help you with and can tell you what may be on the curriculum next year so you can see if you would prefer that content or if the course is just not for you.

You could also have a look and see if there are any courses you think you might prefer and if so, you could talk to the course leaders for that course about what the course entails and if you think you would like it. Sometimes they will let you sit in on a lecture too so it is worth asking!

I hope some of this helps,
