The Student Room Group

help

I’m not sure if anyone can help, but me and someone I know might end up on the same course at the same uni. Does anyone know how uni classes actually work? Would we be in the same classes, or are students split into different groups? Just looking for some advice.

You don't have class anymore... it depends on your degree but broadly speaking, you'll have lectures, which the whole year attends (or they should, anyway); and you may or may not have seminars/tutorials, which is small group teaching, of maybe something between 5 and 10 people per group.

Hi,

I hope you are well!

I am currently in my second year studying business management at LJMU. At LJMU (which might be different to your uni and course) we have 3 lectures a week which the whole course attends and then 3 seminars a week which are made up of much smaller groups (around 20-25). If you were to be on the same course as your friend then it would be the seminars that you want to be in the same group for, that is if your course includes seminars.

With the lectures, if you are on the same course then you will be able to go together as everyone is expected to attend them!

I hope this response has helped, let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hi!

It depends on your course really and how many people are on there. If there are more people, you likely will be split up for seminars as these tend to be smaller groups so that you can have discussions and do group work. Seminars are more like classes you would have at school or for your A Levels just to give you a bit of an idea of what they will be like.

For lectures you will probably all be together as a course, unless there is too many of you but I would assume this is unlikely.

In seminars we get split up based on where our last names are in the alphabet but other courses may do this slightly different.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Hi Anom,

This is a great question.

As the other commenters have stated, lecturers normally have your entire year in so you will be able to see your friend there. When it comes to smaller workshops/ seminars, the size really depends on the university. Personally, I have around 20 people in my workshops.

Once you get your timetable, you could inquire about swapping classes if you wish, however it is not guaranteed. It can make you feel better already knowing someone, however remember to still connect with those around you as university is an excellent opportunity to network and create great friendships.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Hi there,

You might be all together during lectures, but practical sessions and seminars are usually conducted in small groups, usually 10-30 people.
