Going to Exeter University

I just wanted to come on here because i’m wondering about a couple things. I currently do my BA ord degree at exeter college, and once i’m done im going to do a top up year in exeter uni. I feel kinda awkward because it’s going to be the 3rd year for every other student but it’ll technically be my first on the campus.

I’m so nervous that i’m not going to make friends because everyone will already have their friends and so i’ll be like the odd one out, i was thinking about joining a society but im not sure which one as ive heard a couple of them can be quite judgemental and cliquey in a way.

So im just wondering if im just acting crazy for being nervous or if anyone else has done the same thing or felt the same?

Hiya!

I completely understand your nerves, it’s not crazy at all to be anxious as going to university is always a big change. I was also so worried about not making friends when I started but ended up with an amazing circle of people I met through societies, my course, and my accommodation.

I do get where you’re coming from about other people already having friends but from my experience at Exeter, there are so many ways to find your people as long as you do try to put yourself out there a bit, which honestly I did really struggle with at first - but it does get easier. Do have a look at our societies list here - it’s great that that’s something you were already thinking about because it’s definitely the best way to meet people with similar interests, and there’s so many (over 300) to choose from that I’m sure there’ll be something you’ll enjoy! I’d particularly recommend joining the society specific to your course for some extra opportunities to integrate yourself a bit more. Another tip I had to force myself to do in my first year is to try and sit next to a new person in every lecture instead of heading to the empty back row like I wanted to - just saying hi and introducing yourself to as many people as possible is a great way to start making some connections.

In terms of cliques, while Exeter does have a bit of a reputation I can’t say I’ve had any experience with that at all - I’m sure different societies will naturally attract different personalities in some ways but it’s really just about giving it a go and seeing if it feels like your crowd. I’d definitely recommend doing some of the free taster sessions at the start of the academic year to get a feel for the vibe of the society, and just because it’s so fun to try new things! I’ve tried judo, pole fitness, choir, swing dance, and benchball, and have done socials with Taylor swift society, feminist society, natural sciences (my course!) society, snowsports society - I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few but honestly I’ve found everyone to be super welcoming and friendly.

While I wasn’t in exactly the same situation as you, I hope sharing my personal experiences was helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions, and good luck for your top up year!
