Law offers

I’ve been offered unconditional offers (sat my a levels in 2025 season) for newcastle uni, exeter, uo nottingham and loughborough. Stuck between choosing either newcastle or exeter - anyone have any recommendations or deciders to help me choose? Offer is to study law btw

I suggest that you choose based on the look and feel of the two universities and the two cities. I would choose Newcastle because I prefer the larger and more diverse city, but others might prefer the smaller city. Neither university is distinctly better than the other one.

You will probably have a good time whichever of the two you choose. Good luck, enjoy university.

If you haven’t already done so, go and visit both to get a feel of where you might prefer living for the next few years if you can. Maybe consider how far from home you wish to be, and ease of getting to and from uni. Also see what the locality has to offer aside of the uni itself, and cost of accommodation may be a factor too. I remember living near Newcastle as a child and the very cold winters we had there, compared to the relatively milder South West.

Youngest DD is at Exeter and loves it, and is currently in her 2nd year there reading Law. She has found the uni to be very supportive and helpful. Her first year allocated accommodation was off campus and quite a long uphill walk to campus which was an issue for her, but once they were made aware of the difficulties this posed, they arranged more suitable accommodation on campus, and have been very helpful in other ways too.

She is enjoying her courses, the work/life balance, the uni, Exeter and the surrounding area. Occasional visits to Exmouth and Dawlish Warren beaches on the train for sunrise swims, are some extra fun things she has enjoyed being able to do in first year. She was also able to easily attend a Law event in London on the train.

Congratulations of your offers, and all the best with making your choice.

Congrats on the offers, that’s amazing!
Between Newcastle and Exeter for Law, it mainly comes down to what environment you prefer, because both are well-regarded.

Some practical deciders to consider:

Look at the modules and assessment style

Check mooting/pro bono options (amount of law-relevant opportunities)

Think about where you’d be happier day-to-day (distance to campus, city life, study areas, accessibility for travel, etc)

If you can, visit both most people choose based on “feel”

Cost of living

Part-time job opportunities if you need one, etc.

Maybe see if you can find the Law lecturers for both uni's on Linked in etc, see if you can connect and ask them questions directly to help make a choice.

Both are great Uni's, so pick the one that matches your preferred lifestyle and study environment.

Best of luck with uni,
Ulaw,
Alfred.

Hi @martha1358 ,

Congratulations on your offer to study law at Newcastle University! To help with your decision, these are some things that may be worthwhile knowing about Newcastle.

Firstly, our course is compliant with the QAA subject benchmark for law. This can allow you to go on to further training as a barrister in the future if you would like to keep your career options open! We offer lots of opportunities to build up a competitive portfolio of professional skills when you come to apply for jobs, including mooting (a simulated court proceeding where students practise presenting legal arguments), client interviewing, using legal databases and negotiating deals. We also recognise that real-world experience is important in making you stand out in a competitive industry. Therefore, we have links with legal agencies based in our region and the opportunity to take part in pro-bono initiatives and internships.

The course itself begins with compulsory modules in Stage 1, a mix of compulsory and optional modules in Stage 2 and then you get full reign of all of the optional modules in Stage 3. What is great about Stage 3 is that you can choose between either writing a dissertation (a large research project consisting of several thousand words) or studying more modules! This can then tailor the course to your interests and future career goals. You can do all of this in our dedicated law library too!

In regards to the city, Newcastle has recently been voted the UK's Friendliest City in a poll by the Big 7 Travel and is a Top 5 Student City according to QS Best Student Cities 2026! This is because of how affordable we are, the many activities/bars/restaurants we have and because of our close proximity to the beach (it is only 20 minutes away on our local metro!). If you have never visited before, I definitely recommend you do whether that's in your own time or when we have our offer holder days in 2026.

Hopefully this helps! Let me know if you have any questions 😊
