Multimedia VS Broadcast Journalism at Salford

I am looking to apply to Salford University to for a September 2026 start.

I am deciding between applying for multimedia and broadcast journalism but I cannot decide, and the modules look pretty much the same.

Does anyone on take this course right now or did in the past? Please can you let me know some differences between the two that may help with my choice.

Thanks

Go with Broadcast Journalism if you want to be on camera or on the radio doing reporting. Go with Multimedia if you want to be the person who produces the content—editing, graphics, web stuff, and maybe setting up the live streams. The Broadcast course tends to be heavier on the writing/interview side, even if the tech classes look the same on paper.

Hey!

You'll find both courses do overlap with certain modules, but the Broadcast side tends to have slightly more camera work/editing/technical skills than the Multimedia course, which focuses more on the variety of writing styles and methods (e.g. print, online, audio etc) that come with journalism. You'll likely find the ways you're assessed align with the focus of the course, and they encourage you to use the facilities and equipment for portfolio developing personal projects, so if there's something you're interested in the academic and support teams are always happy for you to pursue it.

Did you manage to make it to any of our Open Days? We've just had our last one until June for now, but if apply and receive an offer from us we'll invite you to our Offer Holder Days where you can take a look around and do a taster session for the course to see how you feel!

Let me know if you have any queries - it might also be worth searching through our post history, as my colleague Matt who's recently left the team was a graduate of our Broadcast course, and he's replied to quite a few threads with tidbits about the course!
