Should I do AS level further maths

Basically for a levels I picked maths, physics and psychology, I’m currently in year 12 and
I only picked psychology because I had no idea what I wanted to do and wanted to keep my options open, however know I’m pretty confident that I want to do something stem based for uni, and I feel like me not doing further maths might put me at a disadvantage, I already tried asking to switch but my school didn’t let me, so I’m thinking of asking of doing an AS level.
I just wanted to ask, is it worth doing it and will unis care or is that not that deep?

Any responses will be greatly appreciated

hey hope you are doing good! Given that you wanted to so a STEM subject at university, you probably mean engineering or some other. Further maths will help for that, but most universities do not ask for that specifically. It's nice to have a background understanding in it when going to university so that it might help you understand the first year stuff little easily. But university will teach you the things you need to learn from day one so not doing further maths is not a problem either. Not to put any new ideas into you but doing Chemistry might feel like a safer option. Because chemistry and Psychology match together in university degrees. Doing 4 subjects gives you flexibility but at the same time, it might be little hard as balancing them might seem tough at the start. So best thing to do is research about your options and what you need to do in university and take a look at some universities and their entry requirements and select. No need to rush this as you have 2 full years. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

Hiya! Bit of an unrelated question, but I’m currently doing Maths, Psychology, Law, and Further Maths. I’m planning to do Further Maths only as an AS and sit the exam this year in Year 12.

I’m a bit confused about how many modules I need to take. Obviously, I’ll do Core Pure 1, but alongside that, I’m not sure how many option modules to pick. I thought you only had to do one, like Further Pure 1, but I’ve also heard that you have to do two even for AS, like Further Pure 1 and Further Pure 2. Do you know how it works?

heyy! So for both Pure maths and Further maths, the units are as follows.
P1
P2
P3
P4
S1
S2
S3
M1
M2
M3
D1
F1
F2
F3

Now for pure mathematics, if you do both AS and A2, P1, P2, P3, P4 are compulsory. then for the last 2 you can choose from the following combination
M1 and S1
M1 and D1
M1 and M2
S1 and S2
S1 and D1

And for Further pure mathematics, since you will do only AS level, your units will be like this.
F1 is mandatory.
you can choose another 1 from the following
F2, F3, M1, M2, M3, D1, S1, S2, S3

But lets say you did M1 for Pure mathematics, then you can't choose it as a further maths unit.
Hope this helps!!
Good luck!!

This is for the modular spec - if the poster is in England the exams don't work like this now.

Are you in England as the poster's response is for a modular spec which we don't have now.

yess i'm in england! i was a little confused, because i know there's:

compulsory units:
core pure 1
core pure 2

then optional:
further pure 1/2
further stats 1/2
further mechanics 1/2
decision 1/2

i'm just curious, if i take the AS further maths edexcel, which papers will i have to sit? i know i do core pure 1, but then for the options, do i do 1 option or 2? i want to do JUST further pure 1, but is that an option? or do i need to pick another alongside it

I've linked the spec - that tells you your options on page 65.

"There are ten entry routes permitted for AS Further Mathematics. Each of these routes comprises the mandatory Paper 1 and a choice of ten options for Paper 2. Students choose one option.

The table below shows the permitted combinations of examined papers, along with the entry codes that must be used"
