part time jobs for 16 year olds

i am in year 12 and i wanted to ask if having a part time job or some work to do during the Christmas holidays or on the weekend is good, as I was considering doing one. I don’t really know a lot about jobs and how employers hire but are there any places/shops in London that hire 16 year olds for like weekend shifts or something part time? And if so, am I still able to get in a job if I have no work experience.
Thank you!

Hi @s00300

Yes this is a great way to earn some extra money and build your skills and experience!

There should be lots of places hiring for part term, usually small business are a good place to start with little experience - that's what I did for my first job.

Although I know big chains are common place people start in hospitality and retail as they have a regular turnover off staff.

I have a couple posts that should give you ideas on places to apply
Where to apply for a summer job - The Student Room
Where to apply for Christmas temp jobs - The Student Room
Although they are seasonal jobs posts most places on the lists are often looking for staff all year round.

Once you have an interview this post may also be helpful
Interview Advice - The Student Room

Might also be a good idea if you have a careers advisor at school or college to ask them for some advice.

I hope this helps and good luck, feel free to ask questions

A lot of people have part time jobs.
It would be a good idea, to get some money and also skills and experience.
Most shops, supermarkets, fast food places, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, local attractions, touristy places etc take on people from 16.

Hi there! (:

Getting a job is always great for that bit of experience, getting to meet new people and obviously getting paid lol😅

My first job was when i was 16 too, i got a job in hospitality, when i was applying majority of applications were online through apps like indeed and also my local shopping centres website was adversting - these are fab places to have a look, aswell would reccomend just having a wander round your local area as a lot of smaller businesses may not be advertising online but still hiring, might have posters up on shop windows, or if you just go in and have a chat, explain how much your wantng to work they can let you know if that would be an option! 😊

generally when your getting hired, you provide a cv to the manager and sometimes a cover letter, cover letter is just a bit extra specific to the job explaing why you specifically want to work for that company & anything extra, such as other experience not within your cv

with your first job, please dont stress about not having experience!! - companies will be used to people applying without that experience, on my old cv i had included extra cirriculars id done at school, anything really that id been involved in that included transferrable skills for the workplace is great to include (:

hours wise, most job ad's will say the hours they have availble per week and the times they are needing covered - during school i did around 12 hours a week and found that to be a reasonable amount to get a bit of extra cash without it taking up all my time, during my holidays i picked up some extra shifts too - but generally would reccomend going for a small contract where you know the hours wont be too much!

hope this helps a bit, if you've got anything else your wondering about, feel free to tag me, happy to have a yap🤗

Thank you for this! But how do you manage to balance school work and doing a part time job? I feel like I would have little-no time in the week since I have school and I am available on Saturday but sometimes on Sunday I go to church and I live quite far from my school so I Would need to go to bed early in order to wake up early. I’m worried that doing a part time job will prevent me from catching up with my school work and other personal things

I think you have left it late for a part-time Christmas temp job but would suggest that you start looking after the Christmas period say anytime after the 12th January as some retailers will be advertising for staff again although they may have just let majority of the Christmas temp go.

You'll find out that retailers might advertise jobs for 18 and over but don't let it put you off applying as they employ people from the age of 16, 18 is because of age restrictions for certain areas of shops. Experience is not necessarily okay.

Apply for a Friday afternoon ( if you are half day from school) and maybe 🤔 full day on the Saturday and work around the church time on a Sunday if possible for yourself.

Most places when applying online will allow you to choose your dayrs and hours you want to work so carefully click on this, make sure you do a online profile account for each place you apply to online ( Via there own company website).

I worked in a big name chemist since I was just over age of 15 because they employ young people from this age and still working there part-time.
I worked there plus done a full-time four year veterinary nursing degree and then after completing this I went back to university to do another three years of adult nursing and throughout this time I managed to work with my part-time job so it's doable if planned out properly.
