Hundreds of youth centres planned to reach 'isolated' generation

Do you feel that you actually are 'an isolated generation'?

Would Youth Hubs be useful - not just for social opportunities but getting information and support?

Yes, we are an isolated gen. No, youth hubs wouldn't help. That's treating the symptom, not the cause.

So what's the cause then?

An overdependency on technology for stimulation. The technology widely in use today gives far greater short term rewards than actual interaction; and thus is more desirable for people looking for a "fix" for their boredom. If we take the problem out at its root, things will go back to normal. If you're going to ask me how to do that, it's a VERY long answer and I'm afraid it won't help because it will require those in power to impose restrictions on large corporations, which will NOT happen.

Whilst I agree about the addiction to 'phones', surely you have to offer those young people some interesting alternative as well as 'taking the phones away' - social clubs, sport, arts, whatever?

Offering books to a heroin addict isn't going to get them clean.

Maybe a bit cynical here but I'm curious in what way these will differ from every other youth club/centre/hub initiative that's went before and failed due to finances, neglect and general naffness.

IME the sort of kids that really would benefit most from these sorts of environments are the ones who would never consider setting foot in it. When I was growing up youth clubs were often pretty dangerous as well, children's panels and even schools would 'sentence' kids to attend these places rather than hanging about (in theory) and you can imagine how well youth workers and volunteers are equipped for that, also in some cases the centers were directly taken over by gangsters and used as recruitment centres 😬

So as said, I'm curious how this would be in any way different.

Exactly what I would've said were I not led down the road of discussing that other point.
