Are these good uni options for English lit?

So I’ll be studying English Literature next year, and I meet all the entry requirements for my chosen unis. I’ll be 22 (spent few years working) and I’m wanting a city uni with a good reputation for social life/student satisfaction. Do these unis fit that?

University of Sheffield
University of Bristol
University of Leeds
University of Manchester
University of Edinburgh

If not, is there any you’d recommend instead?

They are all big cities with good social options, but you do need to focus on what the courses offer too. Look at the modules and optional modules in detail - do they interest you? If not, then consider some other unis.

I did that before anything else. Just looking for people with experience of these unis who can advise on whether the student satisfaction is at a good standard

Hi Lauren 28119, 👋

It's great to hear you will be studying English Literature next year. I did my BA undergrad degree at the University of Sheffield and enjoyed it so much I chose to stay on for my MA and my PhD.

The course is amazing and there's a lot of freedom in choosing what modules best fit your interests or what you want to learn more about. 😀

The student life in Sheffield is amazing. The Students Union is award-winning and has so many amazing food options, bars, the SU club nights in The Foundry etc. There are other great student night live spots throughout Sheffield such as West Street, City Centre, Eccleshall Road and more. They also have over 300 student societies and over 50 sports clubs to join where you can meet new people and do something you love (or learn a new skill or sporting activity). If you want to browse all the different societies you can, you can do so here.

If you have any more questions about the student social life in Sheffield, please let me know and I will be happy to help!

All best wishes,
Phoebe

Hi @Lauren 28119

You’ve definitely made a good choice to study English lit, it’s a great course. Provided that the modules, both core and optional suit your passions in all of the universities I agree with earlier replies that your short list consists of great cities for student life. One additional thing to consider though, and I think this is equally important to the course content, is the academic and pastoral student support that is available at each institution. You need to make sure that these departments offer you everything that you need to support you through your uni career.

Have you visited the universities at an open day? If not, I’d highly recommend you do as this is a great opportunity for gain a sense of feel for the university and see it in the wider area too,

Good luck with everything and if you’ve any other questions feel free to ask

Would swap manchester, as student satisfaction awful atm by comparison to other Uni's. Not sure about English department specifically, but generally and forother subjects not meant to be great. UEA meant to have a fantastic English dept and student satisfaction very high.
