Foundation year = normal uni experience??

Hi, I’m thinking about doing a foundation year relevant to law and wanted to hear from people who’ve actually done one. What’s it really like? Is it more classroom-based or big lectures, and are there loads of people or more of a small-group vibe?

Also, do you still get the normal uni experience even though you’re not in first year yet? Like, if you don’t make many friends in your foundation classes, is it still easy to meet people around campus? And can you join clubs, societies, events, all of that like everyone else?

Sorry for the loads of questions, just trying to get a proper picture of it. Would love to hear people’s experiences

Hey,
I went through a Foundation Year for my course and am now in my final year, I can tell you that the Foundation Year was super helpful and interesting for me.
The Academic Way
The way they structured my year prepared me for the transition to the main degree:

Academic Skills Focus: I had a module that focused on academic skills (covering referencing, research, and other essential university academic learning). This made the jump into my first year much easier.

Course Glimpse: The other modules gave me a direct preview of my degree, which helped me feel ready for the content in Year 1.

Classrooms: You get a mix! For me, some lectures took place in smaller classrooms, while others were in larger lecture halls. It varies depending on the module size.

The Social Experience
Yes, you absolutely get a normal university experience even though you aren't technically in the first year yet!

You can join all the clubs, societies, and events just like everyone else.

Even if you don't make friends right in your Foundation classes, the campus and societies offer loads of easy opportunities to meet people from all years and courses.

Overall, it truly helped me transition easily and feel ready for my first year!
Hope this helps!😊

Hi @tkkjj 👋

Hope you are well. I have not done a foundation year in law but i am able to tell you that is a smaller group of students and in smaller classrooms compared to first year students. There are not problems with having a typical uni life, it is the same! You can make friends and do all the normal experiences during your foundation year and also you get to make more friends in first year so do not worry about that 😊

Hello,

I haven’t personally done a foundation year but I know people who have. Generally it’s less people and in smaller classroom unless if the foundation course is general (for various subjects). And you’ll still get the same uni experience, join same common areas, societies, events, friends😊
