Advice

Hey, I need some help deciding on what to do for my further studies.

I am currently studying in my final year of biomedical science and I am planning on graduating in the summer of 2026. I have recently found a passion for forensic anthropology.

The problem is I don’t know if it’s the best decision financially. I have a permanent part time job which helps me with living expenses in the city that I currently live in. If I was to pick for anthropology for my masters I would have to move quite far away from this city for one year . This would mean I would lose my job, move to a city that I don’t know for one year and then move back home.
Forensic anthropology also doesn’t have that many job opportunities so I’m really unsure of what to do but I know that if I don’t do it, I will feel quite disappointed.

It’s almost Christmas now and I feel like I’ve run out of time to apply to start masters in September 2026.

Can anyone give me any insight into what I should do?
also it would be nice if anyone knows anything about this career path or anything similar so they can suggest what I could do to get the best out of it

Hello,

It's completely understandable that your mind feels pulled in two directions. If you feel like it's still your priority and dream to pursue forensic anthropology, perhaps you can take a year out (after completing your BSc) for work (try applying to graduate jobs too) to gain experience and save money for a master's course the following year?

My advice would be to try and get a job or volunteer work that might get you some relevant experience before you think about a Masters degree. Additional study just adds to your student debt, and you may not actually need this, or need it now, to get going with work. Also, be aware of the 'I don't want Uni to end' trap - its very common to feel a bit anxious about leaving Uni and having to 'adult', and many students grab onto a Masters as a way of fixing this, then discover it isn't the solution. My other query would be, why this area. What have you done within your course that makes this a realistic, informed career area, or is it just 'that sounds interesting'?
