Which highers should I take?

Ok so im currently S4 but contemplating not taking some subjects into higher but doing crash highers and stuff. I currently take national 5 Spanish, French, rmps and drama. I'm definitely taking Spanish and drama for higher but I'm not sure about French and rmps. The job that I would love requires national 5 maths so I'll have to take that eventually, but im consider doing higher Spanish, higher drama national 5 history and crash higher modern studies and I will take maths in S6. (I took history is S3 but not this year and I haven't done modern studies ever really). Is this a bad idea? Please let me know.

Edit: I decided for S5 to take to hopefully take national 5 maths, national 5 history (I might crash it if my school does advanced higher), higher spanish and higher drama

Hey! I'm in S6 right now and haven't personally taken the subjects you've mentioned, but I have friends who have which i can speak for.

For Nat 5 history, you will 100% be fine crashing it, having not done it since S3. Higher history is the really difficult one as the step-up is massive, but Nat 5 should be fine.

Crashing any Higher is going to be difficult, coming from someone who's crashing Higher music, having not done it since S2. I don't know much about modern studies, but knowing it's a social studies subject it will be very content-heavy and very big on essay writing, if that's something you're prepared for. I know a lot of people crashing it this year who seem to be managing, but it will be a real responsibility to keep up. Everyone is different, though!

My suggestion would be if you honestly don't need any subjects for the job you're looking into, other than Nat 5 maths, then take what you think you will be able to do best at, but also enjoy. Getting the best results possible in your 5th year will make your 6th year so much easier, no matter what you're looking to get into, but if you pick subjects you don't enjoy studying and hate being in, it may hold you back. Speak to your current teachers about it, speak to the teachers that do history & modern studies, and speak to your guidance teacher; they'll all be able to give good advice, but also be able to run you through what the course will involve you to do so you can see if it's something you're still interested in/can manage. They may also be able to find a senior student who can give you advice from experience. Bear in mind that drama, RMPS, history, and modern studies are very essay-based, and French & Spanish are a mix.

I would maybe advise trying to take Nat 5 maths this year, so that if you do struggle and don't get the result you want, you'll have next year to resit and also have the previous year's foundation to help you back through it. If you know it's not going to be something you can balance with other subjects, then trying it in S6 could be the way to go so you can prioritise it. Maths is very much a practical subject in the sense that for some people the only way to learn it is through brute force; lots & lots of practice (coming from an AH student).

Let me know if I can help in any other way!

Hi there! (:

sounds like a nice variety of subjects your thinking of for 5th year, i took higher modern studies and found it really enjoyable! - lots and lots of essay writing which might feel like a bit of a jump from your n5's but overall a really enjoyable subject! - if you have a look on the sqa website and go to the course content for higher modern studies you can get a bit more of an idea on the type of stuff you'd be covering and if its something you'd be interested in learning more about 😊

only thing i would say is i really do recommend taking your n5 maths in s5!! - it would just save you the stress next year if its a requirement you're relying on for a course/job, would also mean you would have that extra year in s6 if you were to need to retake (:

hope this helps a bit, best of luck with exams this year<33
