Why do you want to study law?

I’m interested to hear how others perceive the topic and what they find most compelling about it!

As far as I can tell, most of those who post here and wish to study law are interested only in a big bundle of cash. I have rarely seen anyone here express much interest in the law itself, or indicate much understanding of what the law is or what lawyers do, Some appear to have a vague idea of "prestige". Not many seem aware of the eighteen hour working days doing grinding and repetitive paperwork or the huddled cubicles of real life large law firms, which are nothing like the law firms depicted in "Suits".

I most definitely have peers who have told me they want to study law for the riches they may receive and I don’t think it’s talked about enough, just how hard it is to maintain a career your not interested in.Often, people with this mindset aim to practice some form of corporate law due to the stereotype of it being “where the moneys at” yet I have heard the reality of practicing is rather boring, making it difficult. However, I have equally been enlightened by people’s genuine interest for niche topics in law too! For instance, I know a mental health lawyer in my family, who was originally determined to practice employment law and happily reached that goal, until they realised how dull it really was, thus switching to something more suited to their interests, which I believe is vital for a sustainable career. Law is a career for those who desire hard work.

I'm currently a high school senior in the US, and while I know that the legal systems are different I've always really been interested in just being in court in general. I have really enjoyed the two years I've been doing mock trial which is just Court simulation but with more acting Flair. I really find it interesting on how the opposing party may argue their case and how I can make my argument better or find holes in their evidence or reasoning depending on what they say! ( though maybe that's just because I haven't actually practiced law and I may be wrong) I am aware that it's a lot of paperwork and dull days, and while I want to be comfortable I'm really not planning on joining a big London firm because I don't want to be worked to the bone, I want to enjoy my life. I'm really not sure if in the end I'll go through with being a solicitor or a barrister, but, life is about finding out who you are, and right now I want to practice law. At the current moment I really can't see myself doing anything else .
