SFE funding for a second bachelors degree in nursing

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew what the funding situation, tuition and maintenance, was like for a second bachelors degree in nursing and if it's possible to get another full loan? I should be graduating with a bachelors in History from the University of York next summer. Ideally, I'd like to apply for the Nursing Studies 4 year bachelors at the University of Edinburgh. Or the Registered Adult Nursing degree at King's College.

Any advice would be appreciated!!

Hi there,

Can you confirm the full name of the 2 courses you are looking at, what universities they will be at and the duration of both courses? Will you get your undergraduate degree for the course you are currently on?

Thanks, Drew

Yes!

My current undergraduate degree: History BA (Hons) - University of York (2023-2026). I hope to graduate with this degree next year with a 2:1.

Also sorry to complicate this further but I did begin a Philosophy bachelors degree 2022 and was granted the full SFE loan. I dropped out 5 months later and cancelled the rest of the loan. I was then granted the full loan again for said history course that I'm on currently. I'm not sure if this will affect my chances for a third application, or if a degree in the healthcare field will be taken as exceptional circumstance. Bit of a mess I know.

The two future potential bachelor courses:

1.

Nursing Studies BN - The University of Edinburgh / duration, 4 years

2.

Nursing with Registration as an Adult Nurse BSc - King's College London / duration, 3 years.

Also King's College offers a midwifery course I've been looking at if you have any advice: Midwifery with Registration as a Midwife BSc - King's College London, duration 3 years.

Again, any help is really appreciated! Thanks 👍️👍️

Hi there,

Is the nursing studies course at the university of Edinburgh a PHD? The other 2 courses that you have mentioned at King's College London are both classed as exception courses so we would not take your previous funding or qualifications into consideration when assessing you for the loan.

Thanks, Drew

That's very helpful to know, thank you so much!

And the nursing studies course at the Edinburgh would be another Bachelors degree, four years instead of three with the final year that allows you to specialise I think.

Thanks again!

Hi Helena Stawarzz,

'Nursing studies' at the University of Edinburgh is only a PHD level. It might be best to check with the university to confirm if that course attracts SFE support. There is a 'Nursing' course which is 4 year in length which again, would be an exception to previous study an equal level qualification rules, as long as you are not registered in that specific field.

Thanks, Clare

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I included the link to the Nursing Studies course at Edinburgh which I think was specified as a Bachelors degree just in case it needs checking, but regardless it's good to know about the exception!

Thank you for confirming, it's been a big help 👍️👍️

Thanks. The September 2026 courses aren't showing yet on the database we use. These won't be live until the spring of next year when applications for 26/27 go live for students to apply on. Thanks, Jason
