changing course during foundation year

I am currently studying physical education and sports coaching and I am 10 weeks into my course, however I'd like to change my course to sports management. my only concern is that I wont be able to change my course because they are rely related. would I be able to change my course 10 weeks in or can i change it after the foundation year or would I have to repeat the foundation year?

This is a decision entirely for your University - talk to your Personal Tutor or similar person ASAP.

Hey,

This is a really common situation, so you’re not alone in feeling this way.

The good news is that because Physical Education and Sports Coaching and Sports Management are closely related, that usually works in your favour, not against you. Universities are often more flexible with course transfers when the subjects overlap, especially if they sit in the same department or school. Being 10 weeks in doesn’t automatically rule it out. Many unis allow course changes within the first term or even a bit later, as long as there’s space on the course and you meet the entry requirements.

Whether you can change straight away, after the foundation year, or need to repeat anything really depends on how much overlap there is between your current modules and the Sports Management ones. In some cases, you might be able to switch part-way through the year and catch up on any missing content. In others, they might ask you to finish the foundation year you’re on and then progress onto Sports Management next year without repeating it, especially if the foundation year is shared across sport-related courses.

It’s also really important to speak directly to the university’s admissions team and the school or department that runs Sports Management. Admissions can confirm whether your original offer would have met the entry requirements for Sports Management and advise on formal transfer rules, while the school itself can tell you how much flexibility there is within their courses. They’re often the ones who decide whether a mid-year switch is possible, or whether progression after the foundation year would be allowed without repeating content.

Try not to panic, at this stage, you’re not “too late”, and wanting to move into Sports Management is a very reasonable decision. Getting advice now from admissions, the relevant school, and student support gives you the best chance of making the switch smoothly and avoiding unnecessary repeats.

Good luck 😊

Hey!

I don’t have direct experience of changing courses myself, but I just want to say fair play to you for recognising early on that another path might be better suited to you. That’s not an easy thing to admit, and it’s much better to question it now than push through something that doesn’t feel right.

The best thing you can do is speak to people at your uni as soon as you can, your lecturers or course leader are a really good starting point, as they’ll know how closely related the courses are and what your options might be. I’d also suggest contacting the admissions team or student services, and possibly the wellbeing or academic support team too, as they’re used to these situations and can guide you properly.

You might actually be surprised to find that you can continue the foundation year you’re on now and just change course afterwards, especially since PE, sports coaching and sports management are so closely linked. Universities are often more flexible than we expect.

As an example, my brother-in-law studied a foundation year in business and halfway through realised he actually wanted to pursue a career as a PGA golf coach, having previously been a pro golfer. He assumed he’d have to start from scratch, but was surprised to find he could finish the same foundation year and then go straight on to study the PGA course. Of course, your situation might be different, but it just shows that there are often more options than you think.

Don’t be afraid to ask the questions, even if they feel silly or obvious. This is your future, and if you know sports management is what you want to do, it’s worth exploring properly. Even if the answer isn’t exactly what you hope for, you’ll at least know where you stand and can make a decision with clarity….
Trust yourself, and go for it if it feels right!

Good luck, Sophie 🙂
