Steps toward becoming a journalist?

I love reading stories and think I'd like to become a journalist in future. What should I be doing while I'm still in school to help get into journalism courses at university? Any tips from students who've been there? 😊

I have a friend looking to do journalism, good a level subjects for it include English lit, English lang (it’s very different to the gcse), media, history, business, politics, sociology, and maybe a language or an arts subject (e.g art, music, photography) as journalism is usually quite creative. There’s also lots of apprenticeships options for journalism, advertising and others especially on the BBC so check their website if you choice not to go to uni or a levels x

Hey! Great to hear that you're interested in becoming a journalist, I'm currently studying Journalism and Creative Writing at Falmouth Uni and it's loads of fun! For now, I would say get involved in whatever journalistic projects you can - if your school has a magazine/newspaper or newsletter, see if you can get writing for that, or if you can make your own blog or podcast etc about something you're interested in, these would all be good things to not only confirm for you that it's what you're interested in, but also show any future employers/universities that you're passionate about journalism! The BBC does do apprenticeships as mentioned above, but they also do 'GET IN' Taster days for journalism that could be fun!
