A level Sociology Questions

hi if anyone here has picked a level sociology, id really appreciate some tips here. For GCSE, I'm currently doing triple science, computer science, geography, and music tech, and im doing alright in all of them, especially the sciences. For A levels, i want to pick maths, physics, and sociology. However since im not doing sociology at gcse, im not too sure if its for me, and i've always not had a naturally good memory. On the other hand, im able to be smart and start revising from y12, making flashcards with anki or whatever so i dont get far behind on the content. any tips? if i dont pick sociology i'd most likely pick media studies, which i didn't pick for gcse either so if you've picked that please let me know if its any good!
thanks so much for taking the time to read the post and im grateful for any replies!

Hi,

I’m a pharmacy student and didn’t do GCSE Sociology, but I did study it at A-level alongside Biology and Chemistry. Sociology was actually my favourite subject, and I really looked forward to class. It is content-heavy, but the concepts are usually easy to understand and relate well to real life. You’ll need to memorise theorists’ names and practice structuring your answers using something like PEEALE (Point, Evidence AO2, Explain, Analysis, Link, Evaluate AO3). Doing essay plans in class, timed past paper questions, and getting feedback was really helpful.

You can stay on top of the work by making active recall resources like flashcards or summary mind maps throughout learning and reviewing regularly so you’re not cramming during exam season. If you’re consistent with revision from AS, it’s definitely manageable even if you haven’t studied it before.

Hope this helps,

I did GCSE and A level sociology.

Your choice really depends on whether you would be ok with coursework or not. For sociology Alevel, you do 3 exams, but no coursework. For media Alevel, you do 2 exams + coursework.
Most people who were doing sociology Alevel with me hadn't done sociology GCSE (it was 2/25 of us who had), so you really don't have to worry about whether not doing GCSE sociology will hold you back.
Most sociology exam questions are a statement about a certain topic and you have to answer by using different sociological perspectives you've been taught to argue your opinion. It's a little bit like English lit and a little bit like history. You'll have to remember a lot of people's names and theories, plus a few studies people have done and how they were conducted (which is more science-y).
I didn't do media Alevel, but I know that there is a lot of coursework involved, which is more creative. I know people at my college had to make DVD covers, movie posters, website ideas, etc.

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask 🙂
