Winter Warmth on a Student Budget

Winter in Kingston can get chilly and as students, heating your flat or halls can quickly eat in your budget. Don’t worry with a few tricks, you can stay cosy without skyrocketing your energy bills.

1. Layer up
Instead of increasing heating, grab a jumper, thick socks and maybe a blanket for your desk. Wearing layers traps heat close to your body and keeps you warm without turning your accommodation into a sauna
2. Use heating Smartly
Only heat the rooms you’re using, there’s no need to heat your entire flat when you’re in your bedroom or kitchen. Maybe setting your thermostat to comfortable 18-20 degrees Celsius and use a timer is possible so the heating turns off when you’re out or asleep.
3. Draught proof your space
Check windows and doors for gaps. Simple fixes like draught excluders, towels or even bubble wrap on windows can stop cold air creeping in warm air escaping
4. Cook and bake strategically
Your oven gives off heat while cooking, perfect for warming your kitchen. Cook in bulk to save energy and if you have a microwave, use it instead of oven for smaller meals.
5. Share warmth
If you live with flatmates, coordinate heating schedules. Sharing a space and the warmth means everyone saves a little money.
6. Lastly but not least, unplug electronics
Even when off, many devices still draw power. Unplug chargers laptops and game consoles when not in use, it all adds up.
