Which A level do I drop?

Hi guys

I am in year 12 and doing 5 A levels:Maths,Physics, economics, art and persian.I am finding it really hard to manage the workload so I figured that ultimately I have to drop one.I am thinking of doing Economics or Economics and management in uni.I believe having maths and economics is crucial, and I took persian because I think I can get an A* in it pretty easily.Universities don't have a preferred subject other than maths and economics.Which one do u guys think I should drop?Do unis find physics more respectable than art?Does it depend on which one I can get a higher grade on?

Thank you so much and any advice is appreciated.

Drop Art.
Its coursework heavy and you don't need it for an Econ degree.

Drop art. Maths and Economics are great for the degree you want to do, and physics is great for problem solving and displaying you have high academic potential. Art is just lots of course work and won't help you in the long term for a economics degree.

What are your grades looking like in each subject?
Which if these do you enjoy the most/least?
Is Persian your first language?

Id drop art.
As you have said, you need maths and economics for the degree you want to do.
You think you can get an A* in Persian, so that would be a good one to stay.
Between physics and art, id drop art. Physics goes well with maths (and may have some overlap/similar work?). Art can be quite time consuming/coursework heavy.
So yeah id drop art.

Drop Art and you only need 3 A levels unless we everyone at your school is doing four.

Physics is definitely more respectable than art - i think for doing econ - art is defo unnecessary - if persian is your home language ( as in you didnt learn it from scratch) you should do some in depth research into what univerisites think of that as I think some unis view it differently - dont quote me on that as Im not sure but Im saying it would be worth looking into

also many unis only require 3 a levels so you could even drop two if you wanted meaning you could do even better in the others but thats up to your school

I’d stick with maths , physics and economics unless you are likely to not get a great grade in physics. 4 A levels can be too much never mind 5 unless you are a polymath or have no expectation of a social / home life!

I havent done my mocks yet, so I can't really tell, I enjoy econ the most and maths is in the middle. Between physics and art , I enjoy art more but I also know that I have to be realistic about my future studies if I want to do economics.
Yes,persian is my first language that's why I thought I might be able to secure an A* in it.

Thank you so much for your advice. What if I have a higher chance of getting a better grade in art than physics? In that case, isn't it better to drop physics?(I am waiting to do my mocks and get my January results so I can decide then)

Some unis have issues with a first language a level, consider having a scan through some entry requirements to see if this is the case. If it is then it might be worth dropping Persian as well and doing art, econ and maths seen as you enjoy art more.
Physics is a more competitive subject than art for top unis like LSE so it may be preferable to keep if you’re aiming for these types of uni but if not then choose the subject you enjoy more 🙂

Some universities don't accept language A-levels in your first language, on the proviso they are designed to teach the language to non-native speakers (unlike A-level English literature which focuses on literary topics for native and non-native English speakers, and A-level English language which focuses on applied English linguistics and creative writing in English for native and non-native English speakers - neither course is designed for language acquisition). That said, not many formally have such policies if for no other reason than it's realistically difficult for them to prove you are or are not a native speaker of some language.

That said if your issue to begin with is that you have too much work to do, dropping an A-level which is of no benefit to your intellectual development also seems practical. Otherwise as above, art is an extremely content heavy A-level due to the requirements of ongoing workload, so is not recommended to take in a combination of more than three. Although if you have no interest in physics you could as well drop that. Neither physics nor art will advantage nor disadvantage an application for economics at degree level (lack of further maths may for some unis though). On that basis I'd suggest dropping Persian and either art or physics (whichever you enjoy less and/or are less confident in getting a good grade in).

Note for the sake of clarity - taking 5 A-levels does not give you an advantage in university admissions. You don't get "bonus points" for taking extra A-levels. You only run the risk of spreading yourself too thinly and not getting good grades in 3 A-levels, and instead getting mediocre grades in 5 (which looks much less appealing to universities than good grades in 3 A-levels).

If you think you will get a better grade in art than physics, then do art. Just make sure that you can cope with the workload/coursework.
Once you get your mock results, you will have a better idea.
