URGENTTT, Which uni should i apply to for law?

I'm currently predicted AAA + B in epq and am considering applying to Southampton, Birmingham, Exeter, and SOAS; however, I'm not sure what to put down as my last option. I really want to apply to QMUL, UCL or KCL as I want to go to a high Russell group uni; however, I don't meet the grade requirement. Do you think it's worth me still applying, as I know these universities are highly competitive?

The usual advice for your 5 UCAS choices is :

1 choice just above your predicted grades - just be prepared for No

3 choices at your predicted grades - these are your most likely offers

1 choice below your predicted grades as your potential Insurance choice

Law at 'top' Unis, especially those in central London, is mega-competitive and its not unusual for applicants who meet, or even exceed, the entry requirements not to get an offer. However, the other factor to be aware of is that top Law firms are increasingly recruiting 'Uni blind' - they are far more interested in your degree grade, relevant experience within your degree, 'interesting person' and the strength of your application, rather than 'Uni badge'.

So - don't over obsess about RG. There are many other Unis out there that are 'good for Law' where you stand far more chance of an offer - Lancaster (AAB), Reading (AAB), Sussex (AAB), Oxford Brookes (BBB), etc - and also that are far more likely to be forgiving if you just miss the offer grades in August.

Hi there,
As stated below, it would be best if you choose to put down one university that is higher than your grade requirements. You could put 2 if you really want to try it out and you think you could get in however, this would be risky and it would mean you have less of a choice if you don't get offers from them. Although SOAS is not a Russell group uni, it does have great opportunities for law. SOAS requires AAB for LLB Law and with a contextual offer this would be ABB. What's great about Law at SOAS is that you get a range of module choices which delve into areas like Legal Systems of Asia and Africa or Law and Justice in Contemporary China. Additionally, throughout your second and third year you are able to choose modules that are outside of your course. For example, students have chosen to do a Chinese module or a politics module. Another great thing is the opportunity to complete placements and work at clinics. During your second and third year you are given to opportunity to complete ProBono volunteering work or placements at Detention Clinics, Environmental Clinics, Immigration and Asylum Clinics, etc. These opportunities are not easy to get and SOAS makes them accessible for students, it also looks great on your CV.

Considering you have a few choices, as you have listed above, I would recommend going to visit the universities if possible. This will help you understand how the university actually is and give you an idea as to whether it is suited for you. You can book a campus tour or chat with our students for more information.

Hope this helped!
Sarah
