MPhil & PhD Engineering Applicants - 2026

Hello all,

I decided to make this focused thread for engineering applicants so we can ask questions, share updates etc.
This includes all progams under engineering department: link

For me, I'm a MPhil applicant, applied in October, interview last month, still on "under review" status. Have not heard really from department or interviewer so not sure about that, tho there was a degree committee meeting for engineering department on December 8th, don't know if that helps those of us on under review or just DP status. Next meeting is January 12th. Link

Main Cambridge applicants thread: Link

Feel free to add where you are in the process and ask questions, someone could have good advice.

I interviewed at Oxford three years ago but didn’t receive an offer. I’m now in my final year at Imperial. At the time, the rejection was devastating for my family and me. I’ll be honest: back then, if I had received offers from both Oxford and Imperial, I would probably have chosen Oxford.
However, having now experienced Imperial firsthand, I can confidently say that I would choose Imperial today. Oxford’s reputation is partly driven by its age and history, but in terms of academic quality and opportunities, the gap between the two is far smaller than people often assume.
If you’re considering Imperial, focus on what it offers rather than being discouraged by outcomes elsewhere. And if things don’t go as planned, universities like Edinburgh are also excellent choices. The difference between Oxford and Imperial is not worth sacrificing a year of your life over.
I hope to receive an offer from Imperial, and in two or three years’ time, I believe you’ll see that this perspective holds true.

Did anyone apply for the MPhil Energy Technologies programme? Anything from the department concerning interview invites?

The interview wasn’t hard, they didn’t ask me in depth technical questions. I just mostly talked about myself, my background, my interests, my fit, why Cambridge, future plans.
As for my background, I have a BS in electrical engineering with a decent GPA (I think?), have some internships, one small research experience & some projects that line up with my proposed (potential) concentration for the MPhil

How much of a notice do they give you for the interview once you get the invite.
